Gingrich Camp: Picturing Newt's Convention Ascension
ABCNews ^ | 3-29-12 | Negrin

Posted on 03/29/2012 9:25:09 PM PDT by VinL

If it were up to Newt Gingrich, when Republicans gather for the 4-day party that is their national convention in August, the GOP will remain divided...

That scenario will open up the possibility of a "brokered" convention in August, one in which any of the candidates can win.

Slim though the odds of that happening may be, a busted convention could deepen the wounds opened by two key primary voting groups: those who like Mitt Romney and those who think he's too moderate for the Republican Party.

Yet Gingrich's supporters think that a convention fight would not only help the former House speaker, but that it would even help the party by stirring up more interest and enthusiasm for the outcome.....

Right now that predetermined candidate would be Romney. Though some Republicans have questioned the establishment candidate, given what seems to be his inability to lock up the nomination quickly and fend off fringe candidates like Rick Santorum, the former Massachusetts governor's path has certainly become clearer after recent wins.

His conservative challengers have still vowed to block him at every turn, and right-wing figures -- as well as more and more tea party members -- have smiled at the idea of a convention in which Romney hasn't collected the 1,144 delegates needed to anoint him as the general election candidate.

"The focus that we've traditionally annunciated for a convention — 'Oh, it's time to come together, we need to smooth things over, we can't have any dissension' — is perhaps some of the reason that in recent elections, we haven't done that well," Barr said. "We still have very much an open field out there. ... A lot of Republicans don't feel comfortable with Romney as the nominee."

Unfortunately for Gingrich...

To Tea Party favorites Rubio, DeMent Tomney Ryan- You're all good conservatives, but let me ask-

How do you change DC, by genuflecting to the GOP-E's Romney? And if you're not going to change DC, what the hell good are you?

Romney's negatives grow higher each week-- the more he talks, the more people dislike him. So, let's keep him talking. On to the convention.

I'm in, til Newt's out.

(Uncle Sheldon, no time to go wobbly, send money.)

“I do think that one could make a plausible argument that because of the fact that Governor Romney’s nowhere near 1,144, he’s had more than a million people vote against him than have voted for him, I think you could make a plausible argument that the strategy that the speaker is deploying is plausible,” said former Rep. J.C. Watts, who has endorsed Gingrich and spoke with a campaign adviser on Tuesday.

“If this thing goes to the convention,” Watts said, “I’m aiming for getting the popcorn and Coke concessions.”

No. It isn’t really a gaffe, but Rick is such a tool. He was bowling with a kid or something, the kid went to use a pink ball, and Santorum said some cheesy things about how friends don’t let friends use pink balls.

Rick Santorum bowls a good game, but gay rights groups say he talks an offensive one. “You’re not gonna’ use the pink ball. We’re not gonna’ let you do that, not on camera,” he told a young man while bowling with college Republicans in Wisconsin yesterday, the Raw Story reports. “Friends don’t let friends use pink balls,” he added. Critics say Santorum’s remarks are just the latest in a long line of insensitive statements.

Organized ‘gay’ groups have long detested Rick. He won’t win any votes there regardless of what he says now. But no other GOP candidate is going to win many votes there either. This may actually win him some votes in net, but enhancing the base’s turnout.

Yeah, well Rick is so conditioned to say things that appeal to his base- I don’t think considers the effect beyond that.

I hope he doesn’t implode— he has to siphon delegates from Romney.

Rick won’t lose votes over this and, I don’t see what he said as wrong in any way. It’s just illustrative of his cheesiness? dorkiness?...not sure of the best word, but you know what I mean.

He could’ve said something like “Use a real man’s ball” or something, but he goes on and on.....just seems cheesy to me.

I agree with you- but the GOP electorate is consumed with this notion of “electability”. Those outside his base are going to weigh these statements relative to his general appeal- his electability— so, I don’t think it helps.

I honestly hope it doesn’t hurt him because he has to stop Romney.

Take it to the convention, Newt, and then nominate Sarah Palin. She is the one the people want.

Sheldon Adelson, says...... it has no plans to change the direction of its pro-Gingrich advertising strategy even as the candidate eyes Tampa — though the group..... could shift from targeting primary voters to rounding up delegates in a 'whip style reminiscent of votes in Congress.'

A convention has not seen the likes of Newt....but Congress surely has and against all odds Newt brought it all home!

Lord give Newt one more state so he can move this ball all the way to convention....and then we'll really see who has the ball in their hand....and did from the beginning.

He’s delusional. Mental illness is not an attractive feature in a president.
