Vulcan bombers, designed for nuclear raids on Russia, trained night and day in Scotland and Canada for a low level attack hundreds of miles deep into Argentine sovereign territory, a new book has shown.
The news is likely to further strain the poor relations between Britain and Argentina that have been at their lowest since in the Falklands War in the lead up to the 30th anniversary of the invasion.
The plans were drawn up by Air Commodore Simon Baldwin, who was the wing commander in charge of the last remaining Vulcan squadron in 1982.
The officer "was left in no doubt at all that attacks against the Argentine mainland were now his squadron's raison d'être", the military historian Rowland White has written in an updated account of the acclaimed "Vulcan 607".
"Nothing formal is going to be written down. Just get on with it," Air Cdre Baldwin was told by a staff officer at the RAF No.1 Group, based in Britain.
The officer assembled his best crews, including the pilots from the successful Black Buck raids on Stanley airfield during the Falklands War.
They came up with plan to penetrate deep into enemy airspace and lay a string of bombs along the two runways of the main Argentine air force bases.
In the summer of 1982 the squadron of eight bombers began training sorties flying mock bombing runs low over RAF Leuchars and Vallley in Scotland.

Because Chile would have been so much better off with Allende and his Soviet stooges. /s
The Russkies do not forget their military past either.
No, they just constantly revise it.
Thats true.
That left a mark
Pinochet provided Britain with valuable intelligence to help them fight the Argies.
$$$$$$$—nuff said?
The armies of both Chile & Argentina wore German helmets & uniforms since WW1. Both have expatriate German communities and following two world wars there was lots of surplus German accoutrements. I’ve seen pix of Chilean soldiers wearing the old spiked helmets and the steel helmets are everywhere in the footage of the Evita Peron funeral.
Fifty years ago, Afghanistan’s army wore German helmets & greatcoats. Go figure.
That was one factor.
