ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) Under pressure to help unify his party, Republican presidential hopeful Newt Gingrich pledged Tuesday to support Mitt Romney if the former Massachusetts governor wins enough convention delegates to clinch the nomination by the end of the GOP primary season in June.
If Romney falls short, "I think you'll then have one of the most interesting, open conventions in American history," the former House speaker said as he campaigned for votes in next week's Maryland primary.

Sigh.
Sad to say but would bet that Cain, Perry, Palin, Sowell and others will support Romney over Obama IF it comes to that
It's WAY too early !
They cut out 90% of what Newt said... he also said that he has not won it yet and he (Newt) is in it to win it.

What's the alternative?
This election is going to define the "lesser" of two evils.
Face it, we're screwed, barring a miracle.
The AP just doesn’t get it. The more they push Mitt, the less we like him. About Newt, what was he supposed to say, that he WON’T support the nominee? Why doesn’t someone ask Romney if he would support Newt if HE wins the nomination? What about Rick? Would Romney support Rick if he won the nomination? These are loaded questions only asked to imply that the others support Mitt. All they have said is that they would support the nominee (whoever it turns out to be). Romney is trying to turn it into an endorsement and it will backfire on him.
That being said, Newt saying this now, could be a sign that he is about out of the race, and he knows the probable outcome.
And Romney will still lose.
I suspect most republican candidates of the past and present would do the same. Nothing new about that.
I don’t understand your sadness. Are you saying that it’s better for Obama (socialist, Marxist, communist, hater of this country and its constitution) to beat Romney, if Romney is the candidate? Romney has warts, but Obama is death to this nation if he gets 4 more years.
Do you actually believe that this country will be recognizable after 4 more years of Obama? That any member of the opposition party will want to or be able to undo all that Obama will have done after 8 years? I don’t believe so.
Newt has said for awhile that he would support any of the others, over the One. He also said which the AP cuts out, that he is not going to stop until Romney gets 1144 delegates. I think Newt should stay in the event one of the others have a major outing of an unknown. Newt has to stay in and talk about the issues. No other candidate is taking Obama on one to one. Romney says we cannot be too critical of Obama. Newt cannot say that he does not want Romney as the nominee if it came to that point-he has to keep it presidential as well as coming across as positive not resentful. The media is trying to keep Newt off his message and keep him on this.
Newt is a wise man. He recognized the perils of more appointments to SCOTUS similar to Kagan, Sotomayor & Ginsburg. That will screw this country for minimum 30 more years.
Are you familiar with Mitt Romney's record of judicial appointments in Massachusetts? Obama would have no issue with nominating any of them for judgeships.
SoreLoserman-ism while the nation implodes is not an option, and is a disservice to American Patriots before us. Honor their memory by voting and holding our representatives’ feet to the fire.
I cannot vote for Romney. We need to focus on what is important....the Senate and House. We have enough to try and keep them without voting for a liberal Republican which will just enhance the GOPe that they were right. Principles here have gone down hill this primary and not it seems the General.
"If he does get a majority by the time Utah votes on the 26th of June, if he gets a majority, obviously I will support him and will be delighted to do everything I can to defeat Barack Obama," Gingrich said.
I don't see the above quote as saying that he is out of the race.
He got one Maryland vote today and I felt pretty good giving it to him.
I just can't believe people are allowing Romney a pass on this.
“Sad to say but would bet that Cain, Perry, Palin, Sowell and others will support Romney over Obama IF it comes to that”
I pray to God they do.
The Prime Directive is to send that disrespectful, commie-appeasing, America-hating A-hole back to Chicago. To ignore that is to ignore how destructive and poisonous Obama really is.
