So you don’t require your kids to go to church with you on Sunday? Or are you one of those “I’m not religious, I’m spiritual” people we hear so much about?

First, I don't have any kids but requiring church attendance isn't what I was talking about. There's nothing wrong with exposing children to the Word of God. Where I have a problem is when spiritual milestones such as baptism or confirmation are forced on children as a matter of ritual rather than a matter of faith.

I was not born again until I was 18 but I am grateful for that because I received Christ on my own volition (or, at least, with my own conscious consent) not because anyone - even a loving parent - forced me to do it as some ceremonial expectation.

While some become willing followers, some rebel because following as children was never their conscious decision and yet they *think* they know what Christianity is all about because they were exposed to the discipline of the church without first accepting the need for their personal salvation and repentance.

From what I know of Mormons (my sister's family are Mormons), great pressure is made on the children to conform to certain age-related ceremonies, much like Catholicism. That is not to say that Protestants have no such problems with upbringing or rebellious children (stories of rebellious children of pastors and ministers are legion) but I believe that we are saved by personal faith, not by parental or church coercion and those who are too heavy-handed in their coercion are the ones who lead children into becoming nasty renegades.
