Jennifer Lawrence stars as Katniss Everdeen in Hunger Games, which smashed US box office records on its opening weekend.

The dystopian thriller The Hunger Games has smashed US box office records, taking $155m (£98m) its first weekend, the highest ever opening for a non-sequel movie and setting a new record for a film opening outside the summer blockbuster season.

The film is estimated to have made another $59.25m overseas, and was projected to be the top title in virtually every single market. In the UK, Lionsgate, the studio behind the movie, estimates it took $7.49m and another $9.69m in Australia.

The film adaptation of the first book in Suzanne Collins bestselling trilogy had the third-highest opening weekend ever, behind Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows Part 2 and Batman movie The Dark Knight.

I think it’s a dystopian future movie. It’s the first of a trilogy.

No doubt. I was wondering the same. I could always Google, but I think I will wait for some Freeper reviews first. :)

Read the book on recent comments from Freepers. Of course, my children have read it also.

At points in the story, it is clear that the book is written for teen girls, but otherwise gives kids a basic lesson regarding the disvalue of human life in dystopian, centralized governments and the role of mindless, amoral “entertainment” as a means of social control.

Disney scoffs. This will NEVER beat John Carter.

Is it similar to The Running Man or The Long Walk?

Why so many woman hero actions films? Cuz overwhelmingly BOYS will simply see a pirated action flick online.

Girls? Less so.

And so financially it makes sense if Hollyweird is shelling out to make an action flick that they somehow motivate chickies to also see it, as much as possible.

See? A freeper here taught me that.

Maybe I'm mentally ill. I'm 67, thoroughly enjoyed all three books and have the movie in my Netflix DVD queue.

I haven't seen "The Hunger Games" movie yet, but the general premise is, I suppose, similar to "The Running Man" - although, as mentioned, Hunger Games (the book) is told from the perspective of a teen girl, and couldn't imagine Arnold playing any roles!

I saw it today, and RUNNING MAN came to mind. Though in RUNNING MAN Arnold had to fight trained killers. Katnies had to survive against 23 others who had fighting and survival skills ranging from very little to a lot.

Interesting. Makes sense. My guess is that you haven’t read the book? lol.

I saw John Carter three times, and I liked it much much more than I liked Hunger Games. I will probably still see Hunger Games at least once more though.

Yes, the book reminded me of the Running Man.

It is a combination of Stephen King’s story “the running man” and the Japanese movie “Battle Royale”. Running man for general movie premise, battle royal for how they are eliminated.

Cheesy. Plus waif woman wins so big unrealistic neg in my book.

I mean King’s story “THe long walk” which was turned into the less good movie the running man.

A true “waif” woman is not very plausible, agreed.

However, bicep size don’t mean jack in a real survival contest. If anything, a thick stocky gym monkey is one of the first to bite the dust...right after the lazy lardass couch potatoes.

A tour de force of marketing.

They pushed it through the schools.

It is a decent book and a decent flick - but full of internal inconsistences, and shallow characters. OK for kids - but not real scifi. The movie could have been fantastic - but is more like pretty good. Book and movie on level of “Moonlight”.

I saw it this afternoon with my daughter and wife. I bought my daughter the `Mockingjay’ pin since she is a big fan.
It was very good, faithful to the book, and I’m not too much younger than you. I think you will enjoy it at least as much as the book. They tamed it some to get the PG-13 rating.
