The Battle of Athens is what came to my mind as well on reading this. The one troubling aspect of both stories is the nagging issue of supporters. No matter how tyrannical a clod like this guy - or the Cantrell Clan were, they couldn’t have kept their positions except for those folks who continued to support them.
Here too they probably have residents who think (to themselves): “Well, he’s a miserable SOB, but he’s OUR miserable SOB”. They eschew the notion of better government for purely partisan reasons.

I was at a party on the West Side of El Paso in 1986.
There was a drunk City Councilman there, dim of course. He slurred to me, “Boy, that Lee Chagra, he was the smartest man I ever knew”.
I replied, “Then why is he a dead drug dealer?”

Why anybody would want to live in that hell hole is beyond me.
Five out of the six largest cities in Texas went for Obama in 2008 (including El Paso) and Fort Worth wasn't too far off from making it six for six.
Dallas elected an openly lesbian sheriff, Houston an openly lesbian mayor.
Too many liberals and RINOs moving in from California, New England, and Florida, not to mention the illegals.
Hispanics are about to pass up whites as the largest group in Texas, and will do so by 2020, if not sooner. As a group, they aren't going to be as pro-gay "rights" as a lot of whites though, so that's good. The Mayor of El Paso is finding this out the hard way, although he should know better.
The days of Texas being a Republican stronghold are coming to an end. I don't know what will happen when Texas finally moves back to the left in the Presidential elections because trying to make up those electoral votes elsewhere in the US will be tough. As it stands, in 2008 more voters either voted for Obama or didn't care if he won than voted for McCain. That's pretty frightening. 2012 or 2016 might be the last time Republicans easily carry Texas.

You’re 100% right. Many Texas cities have become *blue* - lib/RINO infiltration - and it’s not the Conservative bastion it once was; not for a long time, now. Parts of it still are, but like most border states, it’s going to become a very “different world”, very soon.
Wait a minute. What happened to “White-Hispanic”, as in the Martin-Zimmerman case? (Just kidding)

What's sad/pathetic is that if the GOP in Texas had their act together, they could appeal to a lot of Hispanics. Look at who is trying to reverse the El Paso Mayor's decision to hand out benefits to gay partners - most of the opposition to him is coming out of the Hispanic community and churches.
The GOP in Texas seems interested in trying to hold on to what it has rather than looking 5 years down the road and realizing that if it doesn't reach out to certain groups, those groups will automatically go to the Democrats, and the GOP will be at an end in Texas.

This Democrat thug needs a hard and fast lesson as to why there is a Second Amendment.

This isnt Cuba or North Korea: its the United States of America. And here, where religious liberty and freedom of speech and assembly are constitutionally protected, the will of the people takes precedence over the arrogance of those who wish to set up their own kingdoms. Those folks are really living in the last century, aren't they.
