Brahms had started out as a great success. Then his First Piano Concerto crashed and burned, and the Brahms spent the next 15 years re-learning his craft in the world of chamber music. He decided to set a number of biblical verses to music as a Protestant requiem in the German language. This ended up becoming his first Number One hit.

Brahms knew how to write instant folk music, and this setting of “How Lovely are Your Dwelling Places” is exceptional. At the first performance in Dresden, the audience was in tears, and Clara Schumann was crying like a baby.
