Pilots packing heat may soon be a relic of the 9/11 aftermath, as the White House seeks to cut the $25 million budget in half for the federal flight deck officers training program known as the FFDO.
“The Obama administration has had an institutional hostility towards the concept of arming pilots, and especially the FFDO program, since the beginning,” Lt. Col. Al Aitken, a retired Marine and now with the Airline Security Consulting Group, claimed at a panel hosted by the conservative Heritage Foundation on Friday.
The panel brought together advocates for the voluntary program that trains pilots, co-pilots and navigators to handle and carry handguns, including Minnesota Republican Rep. Chip Craavack. He said the program was cost effective – in fact, it was cheaper to arm a pilot than check a single suitcase.
“According to the estimates by the Airlines Pilots Association, FFDOs only cost $15 per flight segment. Let me say that again: To protect an aircraft and possibly the potential of thousands of people, the FFDO costs $15 per flight.
Capt. Tracy W. Price, a commercial airline pilot, warned that history might repeat itself -- he recalled that pilots carried handguns in the 80s and 90s, but the program was shuttered the summer before 9/11.

Basic firearm safety should be required for every pilot, co-pilot, and stewards. If for no other reason than securing a firearm taken from either a passenger, left behind by accident or taken from a terrorist.
A 100 million dollar airplane,and 300 passengers to be responsible for and yet the pilot is not trustworthy enough to possess a hand gun. What can I say? However those really trustworthy IRS guys..they’re OK!

Right. And taking your reply as a springboard, I dislike Willard, and will have to hold my nose very tightly, if I am only left with him as the “R” candidate. It may be that Romney’s accusing Zero of being stupid and inept will not turn of uncommitted voters as quickly as if he called Zero what we all know him to be; a muslim plant. Some people can’t handle anything shocking.
Even the Bush administration wasn’t too keen on the program. They put a lot of obstacles in the way of pilots wanting to qualify, and they made the rules so restrictive as to be stupid and counterproductive. Plus some were downright dangerous and violations of safe firearms handling.
But nothing like The Won. So much for His attempts to assure us that he is not hostile to arms rights. He’s hostile for anyone he doesn’t control directly having arms. Anyone.
