Ever since his CPAC Keynote Address in 2010, Rep. Allen West (R-FL) has been one of the gold standards of modern American political conservatism. He has also been widely hailed as a political model for conservative African American politicians. And now, following recent revelations surrounding the highly suspicious shooting of Trayvon Martin, Rep. West has joined a growing bipartisan consensus calling for the case to be reopened, possibly even with Federal assistance. Wests statement, put out today by Talking Points Memo, resonates with controlled fury (emphasis added):
itself in Sanford, Florida involving the shooting of 17-year-old Treyvon Martin. First of all, if all that has been reported is accurate, the Sanford Police Chief should be relieved of his duties due to what appears to be a mishandling of this shooting in its early stages. The US Navy SEALS identified Osama Bin Laden within hours, while this young man laid on a morgue slab for three days. The shooter, Mr Zimmerman, should have been held in custody and certainly should not be walking free, still having a concealed weapons carry permit. From my reading, it seems this young man was pursued and there was no probable cause to engage him, certainly not pursue and shoot him
.against the direction of the 911 responder. Lets all be appalled at this instance not because of race, but because a young American man has lost his life, seemingly, for no reason. I have signed a letter supporting a DOJ investigation. I am not heading to Sanford to shout and scream, because we need the responsible entities and agencies to handle this situation from this point without media bias or undue political influences. This is an outrage.

You have failed to listen to the recorded 911 calls from witnesses.
Zimmerman is the true victim here, both in the encounter, and in the race baiting media attack.
Either you have an extreme agenda here, or you are just another “useful idiot.”
You need mental/spiritual help.
I frankly, wasn’t following this story when it first came out. I have a lot of things closer to home that I am dealing with, so I missed the initial facts of the story. Can you provide a link to the original facts about the witnesses, etc?
West has had other serious missteps in congress.
It turns out that he is just another racist plantation dweller, and will likely soon be switching parties.
The shooter obviously didn’t want to ‘pop’ anyone, or he would have had his weapon drawn before being attacked. He is fortunate that the attacker didn’t get to his gun first.
Considering that Martins body was found in the backyard of 2831 Retreat View Circle, what evidence do you have that Zimmerman obeyed police instructions, remained with his truck, and did not follow Martin?
Zimmerman was never given police instructions to obey. The dispatcher told him he didn't need to pursue. He said OK and you can clearly tell he stopped running. At no time did the dispatcher instruct Zimmerman to stay with his vehicle. There may be no evidence that he didn't pick up the chase after the phone call ended, but there definitely is no evidence that he did.
In Mr. Zimmermans call to 911 (not 911, Sanford Police Department) he states that his location is past the clubhouse, past the mailboxes, that he is parked by the cut-thru (walkway).
And would that be the walkway off which the body was? If so, then unfortunately for you, Zimmerman's story fits with the known facts. Zimmerman was parked by the walkway, watching Martin. Martin starts to run and Zimmerman leaves his vehicle and pursues through the walkway. Dispatcher recommends giving up pursuit so Zimmerman stops where he is, somewhere past the walkway and finishes the call with the dispatcher. As he makes his way back to his vehicle, he is confronted by Martin near the walkway.
Now, if this is not the same walkway, then you might have a valid point, but still no solid proof that Zimmerman continued the pursuit.
He also states that Martin was walking towards him, towards the back entrance of the complex, then Martin disappeared from view (on the walkway behind the houses).
This is total fabrication. He said Martin was walking towards him while he was watching him and giving directions to the dispatcher. He then stated Martin started running. We hear him exit his vehicle and he is obviously running after him, which the dispatcher realized as well, telling him he didn't need to do that (not cease and desist immediately from pursuing as you seem to imply). The dispatcher asked where Martin was running to and that is when Zimmerman mentioned the other entrance in the back. Martin disappeared after he ran away, not after casually walking and minding his own business.
We do NOT know that Zimmerman stopped the chase. Rather, the opposite likely happened.
I see - we do NOT know that he stopped the chase, even though he clearly stops during the phone call, but we are pretty certain that he continued the chase with no evidence whatsoever. Uh huh, yeah that makes sense. Kinda like "who are you gonna believe, me or your lyin' eyes.
After first agreeing to meet the police at the mailboxes, Zimmerman amended that, requesting that the responding officer call him for an exact location. That would not have been necessary if he intended to remain with his vehicle and indicated that he intended to leave his vehicle parked on the street and follow Martin on foot.
When Martin ran, Zimmerman got out of his car and ran after him. He was talking to the dispatcher as he was running. He was already away from his vehicle. He stopped running when the dispatcher told him he didn't need to pursue. Did he magically end up in his vehicle again after running after Martin? Of course not. The conversation with the dispatcher took place outside the vehicle probably at the spot where he gave up the chase. This all happened within a matter of a couple of minutes. Again referring to the call, Zimmerman was having some difficulty with directions to where he was located. Maybe he thought it would be easier to talk to the police that were actually coming to the scene when they got there to explain his location.
Are you contending that Martin is to blame because he didnt get back to the apartment quickly enough?
Don't go there, so lame. Of course I don't blame Martin. If you recall I even posited to you that perhaps he was lost or unfamiliar with the area since he didn't actually live there.
Basically, you've already decided that Zimmerman is at fault because you think he's a busy-body cop wannabe. Therefore all your indications and suppositions are geared to that end, even to the point of distorting the facts to get there. But, facts are stubborn things and it's quite easy for anyone interested to go back and listen to that call and discern the truth for themselves.
Disgusting of West. FEH!!!
From the Charleston Conservative Examiner:
1. The witness reports that George Zimmerman was on the ground and Trayvon is on top of him punching him.
2. The witness says that George Zimmerman was screaming and yelling for help.
3. Police arrive and find Zimmerman bleeding on his face and the back of his head. He also has had grass stains on his back. All this confirms the story told by Zimmerman and the witness.
4. Police play the 911 tape for Trayvon Martins father, who tells police that the voice screaming is not the voice of his son.
Trayvon Martin was a towering 62 football player.
Unless, of course, the facts ARE 180 degrees different than what they are complaining about. Which appears to be the case.
Because of all the national media attention and 'outrage', why don't they just take the evidence to the Grand Jury with a manslaughter charge? If the Grand Jury refuses to indict Zimmerman, then so be it.
I heard no such thing, and if he did all that you said, he would be in jail for murder, wouldn’t he? Uh huh.
Go march with Sharpton if the justified homicide of criminals bothers you so damn much.
Look, I have my doubts on all of it.
Correct, not the first time for West.
Dispatcher: "Do you need police, fire or medical?"
The call was not made to 911 dispatcher. The response was "Sanford Police Department", not "do you need police, fire or medical". There were calls to 911 by witnesses, but Zimmerman's call was not. Important because it shows that Zimmerman was doing exactly what he was supposed to be doing as a neighborhood watcher - contacting the police.
Zimmerman: "It's a home. ... I don't want to give that out. I don't know who this kid is."
Not "who" but "where" this kid is. Important because it shows that Zimmerman was unaware of Martin's whereabouts.
Forgive me since we are on the same side. But I think it's very important to be accurate.
Not sure, but my educated guess would be because Zimmerman could sue the crap out of them. The DA recommended no charges due to total lack of evidence. Are you suggesting they should have ignored that and just railroaded a possibly innocent man because of some phony, trumped up outrage. That's like giving in to terrorists. Not right.
Thanks. I agree that accuracy is important and should not be compromised.
I must admit at my shock and alarm at the number of people on this forum who are so seriously misinformed or deliberately distorting facts. For a place that is supposedly the antecedent to the MSM, there sure are lots of people here buying their swill.
I did not know that. Thanks for the info.
Are you suggesting they should have ignored that and just railroaded a possibly innocent man because of some phony, trumped up outrage.
No. A police chief won't be a police chief long by ignoring the DA. Thanks again.
So youre saying that in his 30-second sprint, Zimmerman ran up the pathway to beyond 2831, had turned around and was returning to his vehicle when Martin, who has run ahead and was still on the phone, decided to turn around and attack Zimmerman in the backyard of 2831? Ludicrous!
A grand jury will investigate the death of Trayvon Martin, an unarmed 17-year-old shot to death in a gated community in Florida on Feb. 26, state attorney Norm Wolfinger announced Tuesday.
http://usnews.msnbc.msn.com/_news/2012/03/20/10775671-trayvon-martin-case-to-go-to-grand-jury-fla-state-attorney-announces
The Justice Department and FBI have opened a civil rights investigation, and the local prosecutor before he quit the case convened a grand jury April 10 to determine whether to charge Zimmerman.
Martin’s parents said the police chief’s action wasn’t enough, and that Zimmerman should be taken into custody.
“We want an arrest, we want a conviction and we want him sentenced for the murder of my son,” Martin’s father, Tracy, said to the fiery crowd of protesters at Fort Mellon Park.
News of the police chief’s decision to step aside spread quickly among the protesters, many of whom showed up more than two hours before the start of the rally. They chanted “The chief is gone. Zimmerman is next.”
I concur.. I can’t believe some of the FReepers here are already throwing down the ‘guilty’ hammer.. many thoughts running through my mind about that, but I will keep them to myself... don’t need any more issues to war over :/
