Gingrich: The goal is to defeat Obama
MSNBC ^ | 3-22-12 | Moe

Posted on 03/22/2012 8:15:34 PM PDT by VinL

Newt Gingrich spoke up in defense of Mitt Romney Thursday night, insisting any Republican presidential candidate would be a better president than Barack Obama.

"I want to start with something Rick said tonight that I frankly was very surprised that he said and that I hope he's taking back,” Gingrich told the Baton Rouge Tea Party event crowd referring to Rick Santorum’s comments earlier today.

Santorum, speaking in San Antonio, Texas this afternoon took a swipe at Romney, saying, "If you’re going to be a little different, we might as well stay with what we have instead of taking a risk with what may be the Etch A Sketch candidate of the future.”

But Gingrich argued that re-electing Obama would be a “disaster” ......

“I may have some very substantial disagreements with Gov. Romney. There is no doubt in my mind that if the choice was Gov. Romney or Barack Obama, we would have no choice,” Gingrich said. “The danger of Obama is so great that I would hope that every candidate running ... that we would all agree that whoever becomes the Republican nominee, we have one common goal and that is to defeat Barack Obama."

...Gingrich laid out why he believes though, he is still the best candidate to take on Obama in the fall.

“Getting Washington to change in fundamental ways is going to be very, very hard. You had better have somebody who wakes up every single morning prepared to fight. Because if you don’t have somebody who knows what they’re doing and has the willpower and the energy and the focus to do it, they’re going to make nice speeches and fail,” Gingrich said, noting that winning the Louisiana primary on Saturday would help reset this race once again.

Frankly, I agree with Rick to the extent that I won't vote for Romney.

The difference.... I can say that .... he can't.

I'm in, til Newt's out.

Like Dennis Miller says, “Newts’ the smartest guy in the room”. I sincerely hope things turn in his favor and the sooner the better.

Nobody will convince me any of our candidates will be as bad as Obama. I voted at the WA caucus for somebody some here will approve of, but come November I don’t give a GD who our candidate is, I will be voting for him, to send that disrespectful America-hating A-hole back to Chicago

That is the Prime Directive. To ignore that is to ignore how destructive and poisonous Obama really is.

I would suggest donning your flameproof underwear at this point, and applying flash cream to any exposed flesh not covered by goggles or other PPE.

Poor Rick can’t even implode with grace. His calling card is shooting from the lip, but, I certainly hope we stay in this thing, or else we lose our voice.

I know that hoping in my neighbor’s good sense has been a lost cause, and that rejection has come to the only qualified man in the race. I think I am now most willing to trust in God, as I am quite disheartened with man.

Has Rick given any explanation or retraction for that dumbass statement? I’m beginning to think, with his “gaffe a day” foot in the mouth disease, he’s as dumb as that other Rick that ran, from Texas.

Rita, Newt’s not dropping out. Did you hear him on CNN piers?

I've been supporting Santorum up to this point. But you're right, Rick jumped the shark with this statement.

And Newt is acting the statesman by calling him on it. His window of opportunity to apologize is getting very narrow. And Newt's right about Romney. Hell, even Mitt's dog would be an improvement over Obama. Or, for that matter, Mitt's dog's pile.

Don’t know— If one looks at Rick’s statement- “if you’re going to be a little different”- one sees again he tries to mirror Newt’s language— but here to bad effect.

For months, Newt’s been saying- ‘one can’t have little differences between the candidates for a meaningful debate-Romney and Obama are just too close in policy. The party needs a real conservative to successfully demonstrate the gulf.’

Looks like Rick was trying to say the same— but missed badly.

My vote would be Newt, and Romney is my last choice, but I will vote for him in a second over Obama. I agree with Santorum on social issues, but he is truly starting to worry me. He keeps allowing the press and the opposition to take the debate back there. If we don’t make the debate about the economy, and Obama-care by extension, then we are at much greater risk of losing. If I were president with 8+ unemployment, an anemic economy, and an increasingly unpopular takeover of health care, I would love to make the debate about social issues too.

Santorum has lost all sense of perspective. He’s becoming the Republican Howard Dean.

Me too- I admire Newt more each day.

As much as Romney has done to him, the media tells us he has a huge ego-he shows tonight, he will put his country first.

It’s funny that I agree with your own candidate while you disagree — even though you think he’s the smartest guy in the room.

And yet I don’t attack Santorum, and you do, even though you agree with Rick Santorum, you just think he’s not allowed to speak what you believe to be the truth.

Bahahaha Rick followed Newt’s lead on the Etch A Sketch, thought to himself for once I’m gonna get out ahead of Newt, and completely jumped the shark! What an idiot. I thought he blew it before the Michigan primary, but he keeps getting worse!

No........ please enlighten us. Perhaps Newt was waiting for Ricky to implode and then take the lead here. I hope so. When the likes of Jim DeMint jump on the Romney wagon = just ugh...

Yes - the goal IS to defeat ozippy.

The difference.... I can say that .... he can't.

Unless you switched the object of your last pronoun, I fail to see how that isn't an attack on Santorum for what he said.

I just posted a portion of the video— 2 minutes. They cut off the last 30 or so seconds- which I thought was the most interesting- where he talked about the great national debate that would occur starting in July. I don’t know if it will occur, but you know Newt- he makes it sound exciting.

The entire 14 minute interview is at the CNN site- Piers Morgan.

I thought that might be too subtle for some.

I can say I won’t vote for GOP-e Romney; a guy running for the GOP nomination, can not -imo.

Have you ever heard a major party candidate say he won’t support the party’s ultimate nominee?
