Sen. DeMint urges Republicans to unite behind Romney
Miami Herald ^ | 03.22.12 | JAMES ROSEN

WASHINGTON -- Jim DeMint, among the nation's conservative leaders, stopped just short Thursday of endorsing Mitt Romney for president as the South Carolina senator called on the former Massachusetts governor's foes to re-evaluate their campaigns. DeMint's appeal for Republicans to focus on defeating President Barack Obama came a day after former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, another influential conservative, endorsed Romney and urged party unity. "What I can tell conservatives from my perspective is that I'm not only comfortable with Romney, I'm excited about the possibility of him possibly becoming our nominee," DeMint told reporters on Capitol Hill. At a time when a Romney staffer's "Etch A Sketch" gaffe is once again raising questions about Romney's conservative bona fides among the most stalwart Republicans, DeMint's vote of confidence could help the candidate solidify support among the party's base. "His leadership skills, the fact that he hasn't lived his life in Washington - there's a lot to like there," DeMint said. DeMint said he had no "immediate plans to do an endorsement," but without naming them, he urged former Sen. Rick Santorum, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich and Rep. Ron Paul to re-evaluate their campaigns. "I think we all need to look at this presidential primary and encourage the candidates to do a little self-reflection here - what's good for the country," DeMint said. "The sooner we can make a decision, I think the sooner we can focus on the real problem, which is Obama," he said. DeMint made it clear that he views a possible brokered presidential convention this summer as harmful for Republicans' chances of making Obama a one-term president.

And then there is this — Romney is a member of a non-Christian cult, Mormonism:

Hey, Sal, did you see the thread the other day where an OCCULT blog was saying how wonderful Romney would be because he isn’t a Christian?

You know its bad when the Wiccans see Mormonism as a Non-Christian cult.

If Obama loses, I'm happy. If Romney loses, I'm happy. If they both lose I'm doubly happy.

And some of us live in realville. When Romney loses and Obama wins you will just be happy. rat...it's the new conservatism.

“Most of the time you will be stuck voting for the lesser of two evils”

I`ve had enough of that dynamic. Limbaugh hit the nail head-on when he said he believed the GOPe pushes Romney because it has no intention of seriously contesting for the Presidency, but is opting for instead picking up a few Senate seats.

I really don’t understand this. DeMint endorsed Romney in 2008, so there’s nothing new about this. Why are some Freepers surprised?

Mitt was a prefered Freeper alternative to McCain in 2008. In 2008 almost everyone on this forum was for Anybody But McCain. McCain proved that conservatives don't have the power to nominate the GOP presidential candidate. Romney will soon prove it again. When that happens Romney will ask himself...since conservatives didn't support me why should I be obligated to listen to them as President?

Meh, sucks but it is what it is. In a 2 party system you will very rarely have a national candidate you will be excited to vote for. Reagan was pretty much it for most of us (and I was too young to vote at that time). You can sit out all you want, it won't change anything.

Limbaugh hit the nail head-on when he said he believed the GOPe pushes Romney because it has no intention of seriously contesting for the Presidency, but is opting for instead picking up a few Senate seats.

Limbaugh will end up supporting Romney. He will say Romney is sounding better and more conservative and that we should all vote for him. It will go something like this, "Look folks, this is not the way many of us wanted the primary process to go, but the most important thing is beating Obama so we need to support the Republican nominee". That is what happens with 2 factions and it is entirely predictable. We have our team, they have theirs. Not going to change in a system that doesn't allow for coalition building.

DeMint has endorsed the most liberal Governor in the history of the United States, Mitt Romney, before. Why is anyone surprised?

at least jug ears stole the nomination fair and square from Hillary

Apparently Mittens is proving even his 16 billionaire backers and personal fortune and a 6 year campaign can't rent more than 35% of a GOP that hate obama

so the unctuous establishment has decided the only way Mittens can look like a winner - is to run unopposed

what a travesty

No I just choose to not vote for empty suit politicians with records that support gun control, socialized healthcare, Planned Parenthood, global warming, cap & trade, suppression of religious freedoms, higher gas prices, govt. bailouts, class warfare, liberal judges, and the status quo on the broken tax system. Unfortunately that eliminates both Zero and Romney.

I’d rather vote 3rd party than be complicit in what Obama and Obama-light want to do to this country.

Furthermore I think the GOP losership will mindlessly embrace the drivel that comes from RINOmny (which will be the same as Zero’s). That will lead to an even faster decay of the country. With a split govt., there is a chance the GOP losership can use the one testicle that they share to oppose the same stuff from Zero due to partisanship.

The more the Romneybots try to force me into voting for that principless loser, the harder I will work to expose him for what he is.

So...call me what you want...but I’ll never vote for Romney.

When DeMint talks I listen. DeMint is one of the best on the conservative side. He has done more for the conservative side than probably anyone here. I will disagree with him on this but I will not talk about him like he is a traitor. Some of you people should be ashamed of yourselves.

Make up your silly mind. Last post you said you would rather lose than vote for Romney...You are rooting for Obama. Now you say, you refuse to vote against the only real opposition to Obama, so you are not responsible for his re-election. Sophestry.

Admit it. You saw what Obama did over the last 3 and half years, and you can't wait to see what he can do uninhibited by the fear of re-election.

DeMint is of course quite correct. It is time to unite and focus on the real enemy. Focus on defeating The One. Focus on Hussein Obama instead of wasting our energy on pipe dream candidates.

DeMint’s fund called me the other day and I pledged money to them. The form is coming in the mail soon. I am going to fill it out alright but I think I’ll send them a dirty penny instead of the nice donation.. with a note similar to yours.

What a sell out, Jim.
