After a siege which continued for nearly 24 hours, police in France have captured Mohammad Merah, the gunman believed to be behind a string of shootings including this week's attack at the Otzar HaTorah school in Toulouse, Kol Yisrael radio reported.
The raid on on Merah's home began shortly before 1:00 a.m. (Israel time) on Thursday, according to local media reports. Three explosions had reportedly been heard in the area.
The BBC quoted Toulouse's deputy mayor as having confirmed an assault had begun on the home, but an unnamed source close to the operation later told AFP that the explosions were part of pressure by police on Merah to surrender.
"He said he wanted to give himself up. He changed his mind, so we're stepping up on the pressure on him to surrender," the source told AFP. There were no sounds suggesting an exchange of fire following the blasts, AFP reporters on the ground said.
Earlier, the 24-year-old gunman discussed with police negotiators the killing of three Jewish school children, a rabbi and three paratroopers in a string of shootings that began on March 11.

Interrogation time!
The muslim coward is afraid to get what he didn’t mind giving others.
Mohammad?
Hmmmmm...
My goodness. It appears that a Muslim has been the author of some sort of violent mayhem.
The world is FULL of surprises.
I’m glad they were patient and took him alive
“Capture”, and that’s the gist of the fracking problem! (Thank goodness for the invention of fracking!) Hadn’t he been “captured” in the war zone of Afghanistan? Would Napoleon, Caesar or General Guderian, or Alexander who was once there, send such a scumbag back to the housing projects in the appropriately named in this case Toulouse (that is if you speak English and know the difference between your and you’re and its and it’s), as if nothing had happened? Blood of seven innocent good citizens on the hands of civilized leaders of the US and France responsible for nothing as usual!
Explain.
How many times did the French cops try and surrender in order to encourage the Muzzie terrorist to come out?
No other news agencies are reporting that he was captured, and the link above now says that it appears the siege is not over yet.....
What’s not to understand about the preference of taking a serial murderer alive rather than killing him in an attempted capture? Can’t get NO info from a corpse. Earlier, some were calling for RAID to just go in and take him out?
#6. What info do you expect to get from him? Are you they going to release him now to the country of his or his parents origin, like Morocco or Algeria? Why not, we’re so Westernly humanitarian!
They said that they wanted to interrogate him. Whether they really mean it or not remains to be seen.
Under French law, the police get 72 hours with a terror suspect before he gets to see a lawyer. His sleep deprivation is just beginning.
The Telegraph which had live reports until 2Am local time is not saying anything about a capture.
How did he kill 3 paratroopers?
It appears something may be going on... the video feed is now almost completely without lighting and I just heard what appeared to be a couple of gunshot reports about a minute apart or very small blasts of some sort...
Assoc Press article in my town’s newspaper said (SPECULATED) that this suspect shooter “may have been motivated by neo-Nazi ties or grudges against minorities.”
Can barely wait to read tomorrow’s version.
I don’t know, I’m a parrot repeating what I saw, sorry.
He communicated with one Para by email, inviting him to meet at a certain place and then he shot him dead. The other two dead Para’s were standing outside an ATM when he drove by and shot them as well. This happened a few days or a couple of weeks apart. He shot a third Para and he is in critical condition.
Not captured last I heard either....the title is mis-leading I think....the guys been surrounded but not captured in the sense of apprehended. it;s till a stand off from what i know.
