Former Panamanian dictator Manuel Noriega, serving a 20-year jail sentence in Panama, was hospitalized on Wednesday for what authorities say was a routine check-up though his attorney says he has been diagnosed with a brain tumor.
"He will undergo several routine exams," Angel Calderon, head of Panama's jail system told Reuters, adding that Noriega suffered a bout of flu last week.
But the former strongman's lawyer said Noriega's health has deteriorated due to poor treatment in jail for flu and fever, and a brain tumor recently detected by his doctors.
The 78-year-old Noriega, once Panama's drug-running military ruler, is serving a two-decade sentence in his native country for crimes committed during his 1983-1989 rule, including the killing of political opponents.

Must have caught it from Chavez.
Blast. And everyone knows that the USA gave it to Chavez with our new cancer ray gun and all . . .
That would ezplain a lot.
Bet it is just a Pineapple!
I was in Panama in the Navy during Noriega’s time. Man what a jerk he was. Anyway, I thought he was in jail in Miami. I guess he was transferred down there. I don’t want to say anything negative so I won’t say anything.
Who knew he was still alive? Haven’t heard much from the ol’ drug runner. It’s such a pitty that Noriega, Chavez and Castro are all at the ends of their ropes. The ‘Bamster will honor them all when they punch their clocks. -Wb
I was in Panama during OPERATION JUST CAUSE. I was watching the events at the Vatican Legation on CNN even though it was only about two miles as the crow flies from “The Tunnel.” I saw the DEA agents arrest the guy and load him on to a chopper and take him back to Miami. That Noriega was/is a roach is not up for discussion. Howevah, he’s been in the slammer for over 20 years. He’s knocking on the door. I say let him go.
gee... brain cancer. It’s going around. Especially among Central and South American thugs.
Well ..... buh bye..
Raw deal he got from the capricious Yankees who bow to the King of Saudi Arabia, where they cut off hands of thiefs, and they bear hug Leonids Breshnevs (at the time when Manuel was kidnapped.) Let’s reflect on that and, oh, Yalta and Vietnam.
