I have no idea how or why Mexico was chosen as a destination for this year's trip. Sidwell has apparently been doing these trips for some time. They could go anywhere they wanted and I'm sure they wouldn't go anywhere they didn't think was safe. Mexico is a big place, and the whole country is not a shooting gallery. I know people who travel to Mexico regularly on business and don't worry about it. They know where they're going. The only reason the Secret Service is involved in this instance is because a president's kid is in the class.

So: should a president's kid be allowed to go on class trips, or should he/she stay at home because of the added cost of security? Forget the Obamas; think of this as a policy call for future reference. There would be a Secret Service detail at ANY destination, not just Mexico. I don't know if the number mentioned in the article is unusually large or not. They're escorting a large group, and they have to be on duty around the clock. Are you arguing that president's kids should just stay home?

I would expect the detail for Mexico to be substantially larger than if they were going to, say, Italy or Germany.

When you see what is happening there ( BROWSE THE SITE) you would wonder why anyone would want to send their kid to Mexico.Sidwell parents must be extraordinarily ignorant. I never would have signed off on my kid going to Mexico now!!!

I dont’ give a flying f about the president’s princesses. They can do whatever they can afford to do as long as they don’t endanger government employees to do it. Fine with me if obama’s darlings clean bathrooms and feed the homeless from the obamaeconomy during their spring break. The US government and our Treasury is not a nursery for the rich and famous.
