Newt Gingrich had to win Mississippi and Alabama in order to remain a viable candidate. Those states weren't essential because of their delegate counts or their importance to the national election, but because Gingrich had won nothing outside the South and staked everything on a southern strategy.
He lost. He remains in the campaign, but he's a ghost, a bitter aftertaste, and a thorn in Rick Santorum's side.
Santorum now faces his own "must win" primary, Illinois. He's won more states than Gingrich, but his strength so far has been in the Midwest and South, and in neither region has he been able to dominate. Romney has picked up a share of delegates everywhere, managing in some cases to deny Santorum more than a tiny delegate advantage when Santorum has beat him in the popular vote. Even where Santorum wins, he doesn't manage to close Romney's lead. (long snip to conclusion)
Of course, there's a chance that Santorum could prevail in Illinois. If that happens, the state won't be pivotal in the nomination race. It's pivotal only if it goes strongly to Romney. Otherwise, it's just one more in a long and tedious series of primaries and caucuses.
Close campaigns are often more interesting, but in this case, the less close it is, the more interesting it will be.

I didn’t like the snarky comments on Newt either. Sure we say things about Newt politically but that does not mean I want to see him disparaged in the press. It’s like have a brother that you “make fun of”, but don’t let someone else do it or you beat the crap out of them.
I say it’s Romney’s “do or die.” Romney has no message, but only does as well as he does by negative messages against the other candidates, now Santorum.
So let’s help kick Romney out of the race soon, by helping out Santorum, if you can afford to:

Well we agree on a few things. LOL.
1) Mitt Romney is the weakest candidate in the field. I even think Ron Paul would do better.
2) Rick has done better than expected. Even Newt is surprised with his level of support.
3) Newt or Rick will not be the nominee if it goes to a brokered convention. The convention will be full of republican establishment types.
4) It is a shame.
It goes way deeper Obamacare/Romneycare dforest. Romney would be a disaster on virtually every front. His team is stacked with global warming/cap n trade nutjobs. People like Greg Mankiw that favor huge gas tax increases. People that want to index the minimum wage for inflation. People that want to tinker with and “manage” the free market. His record on judges is horrible. He has no serious plans to tackle entitlements. On the social front he wants to use the government to re make society.
People should stop worrying about the media and start recognizing reality. Santorum must catch momentum now or he is finished because the math works against him and his donations will fall off the cliff. Gingrich and Paul are finished other than making a kingmaker deal.
If Romney goes to the convention with 900+ delegates he will be the nominee.
I’m not saying this because I like or support Romney. I’m saying it because that’s the reality of the situation, and the reality of delegate math.
I agree, that is why Romney is so bad, but it looks like we are gonna get stuck with him.
Too late now.
I agree with that.
Well, you see, we agree on much. It is just a pity it had to be those things. LOL
Oh brother, jusy sitting here and FOX is on. Obama is going to take another trip. Oh goodie!
This is far from over!
It’s not too late. We need to deny Romney delegates, and take it to a convention. Spill some establishment blood (metaphorically speaking).
My money and vote go to Newt. I am not giving Santorum my money to watch him run to the left, which he has already started to do. Good luck with that pony.
A long night ahead as the ballots are sorted..........

Illinois election officials: Ballot problem will likely delay GOP primary results
Elections officials in Illinois say dozens of counties are experiencing problems with their ballots, which will likely delay the release of official results from Tuesdays Republican presidential primary there.
The problem: the ballots are too wide to fit in the optical scanning machines, which tally the votes.
We dont know if they printed a little off or the humidity got to them, said Jane Gasperin, a spokeswoman for the Illinois Board of Elections. Nobody is being disenfranchised, but it will be a long voting night.
The issue is affecting 25 of the states 110 voting jurisdictions, Gasperin said. After the polls close this evening, workers will probably have to hand-trim the ballots — or hand count them.

There’s a reason these CONSERVATIVE groups gave Rick a great rating:

I like it when he goes overseas. I wish he would stay there. Keep him out of Washington is a good thing. I am done with FOX, I had rather watch the enemy stations MSNBC or CNN. At least then I know what to expect, nonsense. I like keeping tabs on the ‘other’ side. FOX on the other hand continually disappoints, to me they are much like Mr. Romney. They really really want me to like them, but they keep ‘looking the other way’, much like the main stream news, on too many important issues. I don’t feel like I have a voice anymore.
Hmmm. Wonder how these organizations grade him after 2006 and his support of Arlen spector
Oh dear, I was afraid this was going to become about me Guenevere. Now my opinion is weak. No dear, Rick Santorum is not a strong candidate for the position of President of the U.S. He is a failed Jr. Senator from Penn. He is an old school establishment republican. Yes, he is pro-life and I love that about him. Yes, he has been married to the same woman for mulitple years, and I love that about him. You know that describs half the men in the United States including me. But you do not want me to be President I assure you. And we do not want Rick Santorum. He is so far out of his league it is funny.
And I am someone who is trying to like the guy. I want him to be good, really good. But I am not going to build someone up in my mind just because I have no one else to support. I will support and vote for him if I have to. But he will lose if nominated. I got a lot of money in my pocket to back that up if you want to make a friendly wager. Yes, even 10,000 dollars. LOL. And no I am not Rick Perry.
Go Newt.
At the time, I sent Santorum an email about being disappointed that he didn’t endorse Toomey.
BUT when I found out it was because he thought that Specter would have a better chance of winning than Toomey, and he wanted the Republicans to have the majority so they would have control of the Judicial Committee, I understood Santorum’s logic. Controlling the Judicial Committee is HUGE, because activist judges can destroy our Constitution and have already harmed it tremendously.
When the Dems have control of the Judicial Committee, they wouldnt allow many of Bushs conservative judicial picks to go to the floor for an up, or down, vote. And libDems especially do this if it is a conservative minority, like Estrada.
Pat Toomney later endorsed Santorum, because he knows Santorum is a good man.
Rick Santorum won 4 races, out of 5, in PA and Rick is very popular in PA NOW!
(Rick Santorum) “and you know that I was a leader on welfare reform. I was the guy that led the charge in the US Senate and actually wrote the bill when I was in the House. I was the guy that actually helped end the federal entitlement. I embraced the Ryan plan and said it’s a good first step and frankly I would go even farther than that, ..”

Look at Rick’s past CONSERVATIVE history (& he was a leader AND effective), and look at his wonderful CONSERVATIVE principles now. Vote CONSERVATIVE; Vote Rick Santorum!
Yeah, Yeah, Yeah. Anyone that knows beans about politics knows the most important election is the last one. He was buried alive, 17 points. Yes, in a very bad year, but not that bad. Heaven help us. He is popular in Penn, sure he is. And you base this because he has a lead in some poll for the republican nomination for President. Give me a break. He is considered a religious nut in Penn, and that is why he lost. Now, before you go crazy on me, I do not consider him a religious nut. I apprecite him more than you know. But not as a serious contender for President. He will lose by 10 points or more. He will be a diaster for the down ticket. But that does not matter he is not going to be the republican nominee anyway.
