NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- Wendy's is taking a bite out of Burger King in the fast food business.
Dave Thomas's restaurants became the No. 2-selling hamburger chain in the country last year, industry research firm Technomic said Monday, pushing Burger King back to the No. 3 spot. Burger King had been No. 2 spot since at least 1972, the earliest year for which Technomic has data.
Wendy's (WEN) U.S. sales totaled $8.5 billion last year, edging out Burger King and its $8.4 billion. Wendy's has roughly 5,900 locations in the U.S. compared with Burger King's 7,200.
McDonald's (MCD, Fortune 500), meanwhile, dwarfed both with over $34 billion in sales last year at its 14,098 U.S. locations. It's the largest restaurant chain in the country, followed by Subway, Starbucks (SBUX, Fortune 500), Wendy's and Burger King. (McDonald's phasing out tiny cages for pigs)
Five Guys Burgers and Fries ranked as the fastest-growing chain in the U.S. last year, Technomic said, followed by Chipotle Mexican Grill (CMG) and Jimmy John's Gourmet Sandwich Shop.

I used to get a couple of ‘em for a quick lunch while I was busy at work. I’d wolf one down and stick the other one in my back pocket. Sometimes I’d forget about it and it would be flat as a pancake by the time I got home and my wife discovered it.
They used to rock in the day when a western star was like a buck
BBQ sauce Onion rings, cheese.
I could murder a couple.
Now they want $8.50 for a burger fries and a drink.
Hardees used to be a nice alternative too back when they were on their game
Seriously, there is so little difference between (among) these chains that I’m surprised one does worse than another, and that a BK went outta business in my town (now an Indian/Pakistani joint with the inherited BK decor!) right across a busy downtown corner from a Mickey D’s.
Rubio’s Fish Tacos still doesn’t make the list.
Thats the one I give to the dog LOL
When ordering that meal on the road, you always eat the fries first lest they get cold.
Sometimes a burglar gets left over.
Rubios freakin Rocks!
At least they did in the early eighty.
And the clown didn’t?
Yeah, the real flame-broiled burgers were great, but the last time I got a real one at BK was in the 90’s. Now, they are lukewarm, tasteless, with cold cheese and they just slather it with mayonaisse to try and give it some flavor. Disgusting.
One of the things I like about Hardees is me and the bother inlaw drove this huge ass John Deere combine out for delivery in Wi and he just pulls this thing into a field beside it to park LoL It would not fit in the parking lot.
Nobody bitched, nobody complained.
And Hardees was flame broiling burgers.
Its a pretty workaday outfit, or it was.
My only experience with Carl Jr's was a stop in Cheyenne about a year ago. We walked in after being on the road for 8 hours to find the men's bathroom was flooding out the door into the restaurant.
(not kidding) I had to pick up my sons and step over a floating urinal cake to make it in the door.
I'm sure the burger would have been fine under normal circumstances, but the urinal cake and that fake lemon-like smell is all I can remember of the occasion.
To this day I wonder why we even stayed, but we were a little embarrassed for them and lets face it, its hard to find food while traveling with kids through Wyoming.
Perhaps I owe them another chance at a different location
They got more flavor than McDodo.
I dont know if its liquid smoke or what but it has some flavor, and BK is on of the only joints that put veg on the burgers.
I Want Crisp Lettuce, Onions and decent tomatoes.
Carl’s seems to be confined to truck stops around here now.
I still like the Big Mac but its impossible to eat on the road, its over priced and it would be dry as a bone if it weren’t for the “special sauce”
Usually its cold
Life sure gets tejus... LOL
LOL! The look on Jeff Bridges face!!!
Burger King has gone seriously downhill recently. The one near me insists on smothering their burgers in mustard, which I HATE on a burger. Try to ask for no mustard, and it then becomes a game of chance to see if the illegal immigrant behind the counter remembers your request. Luckily I have a Wendy’s close by, their new Cheesy Cheddarburger is really good. And best of all, I have a 5 Guys a mile away from me. Best of them all, in my opinion.
I used to love their Whalers too. Hot, and delicious. Last time I ordered one - a few years ago - I ended up throwing it away. What has happened to their food is scary. Oh yeah, they embraced Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move campaign. Don’t these people realize that everything the zero family touches turns to ashes? Guess not.
Bye, bye BK - it was nice knowing ya! The old Wendy’s ads are perfect for BK now - “where’s the beef?”
This is the dilemma with the road burger LOL
I gotta drive!!
Truck stops are good, if I run into one with a Carl’s next road trip we’ll stop
