Many years ago, Robert Stack said (on Unsolved Mysteries) that the Japanese had forced the plane down and then executed Earhart and her navigator. There were local witnesses they interviewed who claims to have seen the executions.
During the island hopping campaign of WWII, marines found the plane intact in a hangar along with personal effect and passports.
“Plain clothes” folks from the government destroyed all the evidence. Some former marines were interview who found the plane and saw the burning.
Robert Stack’s credentials as a historian are, of course, untouchable.

All you need to know about Bob Stack and Unsolved Mysteries is that they had a show ready to go about Vince Foster, and canceled it after the word came down from Bill and Hillary.
