[Maryland] Senate passes bill banning smoking with young child in car

The Maryland Senate passed a bill Wednesday morning that would make it illegal for a driver or passenger to smoke in a vehicle occupied by a child under 8 years old.

Senators voted 27-19 to send the bill to the House of Delegates after a lively debate over the rights of children to be protected from the dangers of second-hand smoke versus the rights of parents to be free from government intrusion in their vehicles.

The legislation would allow police officers to pull over drivers observed to be smoking in cars with a child in a booster seat. Children 8 and up were exempted because of the difficulty of determining the age of an older child. The maximum fine for a violation would be set at $50.

Proponents pointed to multiple scientific studies have shown that children in cars where others smoke are exposed to unsafe levels of toxins -- whether the windows of the vehicle are rolled up or not.

"This isn't about Big Brother. This is about little brother in the back seat," said Sen. Jamie Raskin, D-Montgomery.

Dark-tint all windows, except the windshield, if legal in your state.

Smoking crack in cars in the inner-cities is okay, but cigarettes are not.

Liberty is a fad that has passed its time.

Most people will gladly give up their freedom in exchange for the right to mind their neighbor’s business.

Lies, lies, and more lies.

In absolutely pure car where no one has ever smoked all passengers are exposed to unsafe levels of toxins whether the windows are open or not.

Just put the kids in a bubble the day they are born and be done with it.

The maximum fine for a violation would be set at $50.

For now. Just wait a couple of years and it will be $1000.00 fine plus jail time. Mark my word.

The Maryland Senate passed a bill Wednesday morning that would make it illegal for a driver or passenger to smoke in a vehicle occupied by a child under 8 years old.

Perfectly legal to purchase them however as long as the 300% tax on them is paid.

How did these brilliant from birth politicians come up with "8 years old" I wonder?

Just put the kids in a bubble the day they are born and be done with it.

Or just bag the idea of kids altogether because life is just too risky. It's "for the children".

"This isn't about Big Brother.

Of course not as long as one is licensed to drive and the vehicle is licensed and the baby has a social security number and you have insurance and you have paid your taxes and you are clean while driving and you can prove the baby is yours and you aren't carrying a tool of self defense and not carrying more than $10,000 cash and you have a catalytic converter and an approved baby carrier is installed in the vehicle and you can prove where you are driving to and you don't have any wants or warrants.

Eating a big fat greasy cheesburger with a young child in a car will be next.

Then it will be eating a big fat greasy cheesburger in a car.

How did these brilliant from birth politicians come up with "8 years old" I wonder?

Because any child 8 and under must be in a child seat in a vehicle in Maryland.

Driving from Virginia to Delaware through Maryland used to be a nightmare for us determining if we had to have a seat or not. Thank goodness she is passed that stage and I don't worry about it any longer.
