President Obama had just arrived home, walking across Lafayette Square after attending Sunday services with his family at St. Johns Church. In the West Wing, Obama ducked into the spacious office of his chief of staff, where he found his negotiating team huddled with two leading Republicans and a passel of aides.
To the outside world, it looked like a do-nothing summer Sunday, a disturbingly quiet reminder of government dysfunction. The prevailing theme on the weekly political talk shows was things falling apart. In two weeks, the government would be unable to pay its bills. Where were the administration and congressional leaders who might work out a compromise to avert the looming disaster? No meetings were taking place at the White House that day, one network host said.
The reality was quite different. Around 11 a.m. July 17, John A. Boehner, the House speaker, and Eric Cantor, the majority leader, had slipped through a side entrance, out of view from the bank of television cameras stationed near the front gate off Pennsylvania Avenue. The on-and-off secret negotiations were on again. They had resumed with a Friday meeting at the Capitol. And they seemed to be going so well by the time Obama returned from church that he invited Boehner and Cantor into the Oval Office to talk, just the three of them.
The sermon the president had heard that morning was a stirring Old Testament account of Jacob dreaming of a ladder that stretched to heaven. Sometimes, the pastor had said, the best adventures occur when we venture into unmarked terrain. Obama was in a similar frame of mind. Against the vehement advice of many Democrats, including some of his own advisers, Obama was pursuing a compromise with his ideological opponents, a grand bargain that would move into unmarked territory,

Probably the fact that it appeared in the WaPo might indicate that the press may think it needs to start to actually report things, especially the truth, when it comes to BHO.
Huh? this fraud has gone to church what.. 3 times? and only when cameras were recording it
It was fairly obvious to me why the liberal MSM is doing it. They are trying to sow seeds of discord among Reps, especially between the GOP and the Tea Party. Boehner was prepared to stab the Tea Party congressmen in the back and raise taxes. It showed how craven and corrupt the GOP House leadership is and that they can't be trusted to do the right thing. Instead, it is business as usual.
Articles like this are meant to dispirit the Tea Party movement, which worked long and hard in the 2010 midterms to toss the Dems out. Now we learn that John (Benedict Arnold) Boehener still doesn't get it and will not fight for TP basis principles.
The MSM will, eventually, realize that they need readers and viewers after November 2012.
I do hope Republicans in Congress are smart enough to read this entire article into the Congressional Record, in the House and in the Senate!
bttt
I heard him talking about this, too. He said he is going to try and get to the bottom of “why” they are publishing a story on this at this “particular” time - and on the front page above the fold, front and center, too, He said that the New York Times is supposed to be coming out with their own article on this also.
Verrrrrrry interesting.
Can someone show me one occasion where Obama actually sat with others and created a solution?
For example, healthcare was done by Pelosi and Reid without Obama.
Hm......
Obama needs a political life jacket. He needs something for political cover so he may just cut a deal with Republicans that will anger his base but make Independents happy to see such a move. The ComPost and NYTimes are merely paving the way and preparing their readers for incoming.
“Poor, heroic Obama vs a ‘do-nothing’ Congress”!!
If you read this article it shows that the dems actually thought Boehner with Cantor had beat Obama until the idiots in the Gang of Six cut Boehner’s knees out from under him by coming out with a rogue plan without consulting the leadership.
Who would want any of those jobs?
That’s not news re: Obama. I suppose it isn’t news either that Boehner and Coburn were working more with Obama and the Democrats than the GOP and the tea party base.
Bingo, we have a winner. Exactly, what they are reporting is exactly what happened...so he went on TV and castigated the GOP after a deal had been reached. The end result is he could not lose in the media from that point on. The GOP had already ceded victory and stabbed the tea party in the back, one more time, plus he knew he was going to get what he wanted. What was Bonehead now going to do, go back on his word and say no deal we are not raising taxes?
Exposed, yes. But then Boehner DID hand the Obama the no-limit credit card anyway. Whither blame?
I remember the discussion about this at the time. There were people who saw it as Boehner calling Obama's bluff. Seems like that is exactly what happened and Obama folded and covered up his humiliation by lying. Seemed like he'd gotten away with it until now.
Exposing Obama as a liar and a fraud was not the objective of this article. It exposed Boehner as a liar and a fraud who was doing one thing privately and saying another publicly. Obama stands to gain from this disclosure.
I also disagree with you.
This hurts Obama.
Calling Obama’s bluff meant agreeing to tax increases, something Boehner and Cantor said they would not agree to. The MSM is using this as a wedge issue to undercut the GOP House leadership and hurt them with the Tea Party. This could affect turnout in November and divide Reps.
He has just turned my way on his analysis.
