Santorum Hammers Obama With Dubious Claim On Healthcare Bill Cost

By Matt Pearce March 17, 2012

If you're looking for a possible roadmap for Rick Santorum's campaign in the week ahead, he provided one in his stump speech in Osage Beach, Mo., on Friday.

"You know what people are going to be talking about this week and next week?" Santorum asked the crowd of a few hundred on Friday.

"Obamacare. Why? Well, the Congressional Budget Office this week just came out with their new numbers. And I know you're gonna be shocked to hear this, but it's twice as expensive as what President Obama said."

This comment provoked a loud “Oh my God” from someone in the audience along with a host of other angry murmurs. Santorum went on to spend more time talking about healthcare than any other topic during his speech, and he hammered Obama using the CBO's numbers. "Believe it or not, remarkable," he said. "It's almost 2 trillion dollars over the next 10 years."

Except you might not want to believe it, because Santorum's twice-as-expensive claim is "absolutely untrue," according to FactCheck.org, a project for the Annenberg Public Policy Center.

There have been numerous reports that the cost has just doubled. It’s a little less than doubled if you take it out to 9 years, as the CBO did, but if you extend it to 10 years, then it’s doubled.

And we all know that the CBO is in the tank for the Democrats, so it’s pretty certainly even worse than that.

LA Times = Liars.

You have to remember the government “Law of 10”: Any government program will end up costing 10 times as much as originally projected

It will not cost 2 trillion, it will cost 10 trillion after 10 years.

Santorum should be talking about Obamacare this week and next? he said
because of the CBO numbers that just came out?? Was that a typo????

Obamacare is going to be argued before the Supreme Court starting Monday March 26
for three days!

Can you believe the STUPIDITY AND LAZINESS of Republicans, I thought
they would have a big build up of PRESS CONFERENCES IN FRONT OF THE
SUPREME COURT, KEN CUCCINELLI AT LEAST, EVERY DAY THESE TWO WEEKS
BEFORE ORAL ARGUMENT.

DR. Barasso, Dr. Coburn and Dr. Paul — Joint Press Conference US Senate.

Dr. Burgess, Dr. Gingrey, Dr. Andy Harris, all the doctors in the House.

Michelle Bachmann, Louis Gohmert.
STeve King are the only ones going to bat.

SORRY FREEPERS

Boehner and McConnell AIN”T GOING TO REPEAL OBAMACARE

THEY DON”T CARE THEY ARE JUST LIKE OBAMA

WHY WOULD THEY DESTROY THEIR WHOLE ATM MACHINE OF LOBBYISTS
WHEN THE DEMS HAVE TAKEN OVER 1/6 THE ECONOMY?
What does Boner get out of it? Liberty? Freedom?

Ha ha ha ha ha.

REPUBS IN DC ARE DISGUSTING.

You would think at least Paul Ryan would give a big speech in
front of the Supreme Court.

Factcheck’s logic is horribly flawed.

The CBO projection does show the cost of Obamacare is much higher than projected. But, the revenues are also higher than projected. Note that those higher revenues are money taken from the pockets of Americans. Factcheck states that means the net cost is actually a little lower.

The fact that the revenue is higher doesn’t have any bearing on whether or not the cost is higher.

Factcheck’s logic is like saying that gas price doubled, but if your income also went up, the gas is cheaper.

Agreed. The GOP is either lazy or incompetent. I called my reps on Thursday (after Obama’s speech) and asked where they were on gas? I’m seeing nothing from the GOP. Obama and the press basically get 24/7 to defend Obama/blame “big oil.”

I asked them why they don’t have a massive press conference in Texas where the empty keystone pipes are laying (shovel ready). Bring in the $5 gas signs construction workers standing behind them (like Obama does all the time)etc.

The guy was speechless. This party has no desire to beat up Obama.

They have creativty relatiove to media and PR. They rely on the presss who is one sided and will defend Obama.

“Agreed. The GOP is either lazy or incompetent.”

FRiend, well said. McConnell and Boehner’s have totally muzzled the GOP in Congress. It’s nauseating. Totally counterproductive and it makes you think they just want to hold on to what they have in Congress. They do not care at all about weakening and then beating Obama if it means taking any risks. So they continue to tiptoe to November while the dims attack on every issue. The GOP just has no stomach for combat with the dems. Snowe left because she didn’t want to vote against Obamacare, etc. , etc.

Yeah these guys better start paying attention, they could be campaigning to be the president of nothing. Just four dummies running around the country talking about nothing, pretending to be leaders. Seems to me someone needs to talk in public about Obamas new executive order taking control over all US resources.

"Factcheck’s logic is like saying that gas price doubled, but if your income also went up, the gas is cheaper."

Your correct comment bears repeating over and over and over again!!!

Plus the other comments regarding the GOP leadership eunuchs is appauling and disappointing, but true!!!

We desperately need a champion!!!

It's hard to watch our ship of state with sails (spending) still unfurled, heading straight for the rocks. The fool in the whitehouse is busy running up another spending spinnaker!!!

Factcheck is “correctly” pointing out that the bill didn’t really cost twice as much as it originally was going to cost. It in fact costs just a little bit more. The actual lie was when Obama claimed it wouldn’t cost money, or that it would cost less than a trillion. They always knew the 11th and 12th years would be budget-busters, they simply ignored it.

Now that those two years are in the 10-year-window, we see those costs, so they can’t deny it anymore.

It’s like Obama gets protection by Factcheck because he lied before.

Note that those higher revenues are money taken from the pockets of Americans...and apparently a significant portion of them are in anticipated fines to be paid under various requirements of the bill - hardly a noble acomplishment.....
