Syd Barrett started playing guitar in bands when he was 16, encouraged by his mother to help him recover from his father's death. Geoff Mott and the Mottoes as one of the earliest, around 1961. Roger Waters and Barrett were childhood friends and Waters visited Syd's gigs. Barrett enrolled in Camberwell Art School in South London in 1964 to study painting, the same year Syd and Roger started the band that would become Pink Floyd.
They underwent various line-up and name changes such as "The Abdabs", "The Screaming Abdabs", "Sigma 6", and "The Meggadeaths". In 1965, their name was "The Tea Set", and when they found themselves playing a concert with a band of the same name, Barrett came up with the name "The Pink Floyd Sound" (later "The Pink Floyd"). He devised the name "Pink Floyd" by juxtaposing the first names of Pink Anderson and Floyd Council, bluesmen he had read about in a liner sleeve note for a 1962 Blind Boy Fuller LP. Barrett later told the story that the name was transmitted to him by a flying saucer while he was sitting on Glastonbury Tor, but Syd, in a tragic tale of too much pressure and too much LSD, eventually lost his marbles completely and was institunalized.
By late '67, Syd had become such a basket case that David Gilmore, a school chum of Rodger's, was brought in to cover his guitar parts, because despite having composed the vast majority of the band's material, Syd simply roamed the stage or sat pensive while the band performed. When he did endevour to play, he would strum the same chord repetitively and his compositions became strange and impossible to perform. The band relate that one night in 1968 they simply elected not to pick Syd up for a gig, and from that point he was no longer a member, although he often showed up at gigs and glared at David Gilmore and many stories place him showing up at studio sessions at Abbey Road as late as 1975, often unrecognizable.
Syd Barrett seemed to haunt Pink Floyd and they later created a large body of work dedicated to him, including sections of "Dark Side of The Moon", "The Wall" and "The Division Bell". "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" and "Wish You Were Here" are the most famous of these Syd inspired compositions, but it's hard to find a post-1970 Pink Floyd release without some reference to him.
