Viva Las Vegas was a forgettable movie from 1964 which came out as Elvis Presleys career was being capsized by the first wave of the British Invasion. (His career wouldnt return full bore until the Fathers of Hot Country brought it back in 1968. Ill do those songwriters as a future project.) The title song from the movie by
Doc Pomus and Mort Shuman ended up having a life of its own, becoming an anthem over the decades. It was a fitting way to end a career.
Elvis Presley: Viva Las Vegas
This was something special. These guys gave it a different spin altogether!
ZZ Top: Viva Las Vegas
Springsteen did an album of Elvis tunes, and its funny how another showman could out-rock Elvis.
Bruce Springsteen: Viva Las Vegas
Even the punk rockers could do something with this classic, although they treat it with irony.
Dead Kennedys: Viva Las Vegas
In 1965, Doc Pomus took a severe fall, and he spent the rest of his life in a wheelchair. Doc and Mort split up, and Doc spent the next decade as a professional gambler. By the late Seventies, Doc was working again, this time with Dr. John and B. B King. In 1991, Doc Pomus became the first white man to win the R&B Foundations Pioneer Award. In March 1991, Docs four-pack-a-day habit caught up with him, and he died of lung cancer. In 1992 he was voted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Mort Shuman moved to Paris, then wrote, produced and starred in Jacques Brel is Alive and Well and Living in Paris, which made his fortune. He moved to London and wrote tunes for a number of shows that never got staged. Mort died of liver disease in November 1991.
Their music lives on!
