The NCAA tournament has barely started, and we already have our first racist chant (video) 16 Comments
The State of Mississippi, fresh from representing in the Republican primary election on Tuesday, showed us again what theyre made of as Southern Mississippi took on Kansas State in the first round of the NCAA Basketball Tournament. Larry Eustachys return to the tournament fell short in a 70-64 win by KState, although the Golden Eagles played well. However, at least one member of the crowd at the Consol Energy Center in Pittsburgh thought it would be fun to mock KState freshman guard Angel Rodriguez with a Wheres your green card? chant. Bad form, Southern Miss.
That Wheres your green card? chant comes courtesy of Southern Mississippis band and is directed at K-States freshman guard Angel Rodriguez, who is from Puerto Rico.

Doesn't seem racist to me, just an attempt to unnerve the player. Of course, it may be rude, but I guess it wouldn't bother me if someone were chanting "Hey redneck! Go back to the boondocks!" Or whatever.
Keep in mind....the media HAS YET TO REPORT on the black kid saying, "This is what you deserve white boy," before attacking him physically. (I can't recall where this happened, but Drudge had it a few days ago.)
I see what you did there, Mr. Chandler. Salary review coming up?
You have got to be kidding me!
One guy making a boorish catcall is not a “chant”, which suggests an organized quip repeated by a group of people. And quite frankly, this guy doesn’t bother me as much as the profanity spewing drunks who are always present and invariably seen to be sitting in my row or right behind me.
Eeeek! Eeeeeek! Eeeeek!
Let me pull up my skirt and jump up on a chair.
Eeeeek! Eeeeeek! Eeeeeek!
American boys are being killed in Afghanistan and CBS is worried about this?
Pardon me....it’s NBC.
It happened in Kansas City, Missouri.
I’ve been known to yell “where’s your green card” at a British friend of mine. Is that being racist?
I am a radio announcer for a mid major basketball program. Once, when we played at Duke, (where the fans rehearse) every time a particular player on our team touched the ball, the “Dukies” chanted “ugly white guy”. Pre-meditated bias at its worst. (sarc)
This kind of things have gone on for years. Typical immature college behavior—it doesn’t imply racism. When I was at ASU, I was appalled at something my fellow students did. Steve Kerr (who is white) was playing for the University of Arizona. His father, who was the President, I believe, of American University in Beirut, was killed by Hizbollah in 1983. The students chanted “How’s your Dad Steve?”
“Screw the media white boys!”
The incident took place in Kansas City, abetted by racist teachers and administration. The attack was attempted murder, IMO, as the miscreant poured gasoline on the white teenagers head and put a flame too it. The victim, acted rationally, put the fire out and only suffered minor burns to his face.
The NappyOne
I’d rather hear more about the Penthouse Pet.
Sorry, but gotta say, if it doesn’t seem racist, gotta wonder a bit. Really can’t see the band screaming where is your green card to a white guy now could you?
Clearly the hecklers were baiting based on race, and so to claim race had nothing to do with it, is silly.
Now, is it a national catastrophe? No, but it sure doesn’t help the image of the south as nothing more than a bunch of hillbillie red necked racists.
Ditto........
Wheres your green card?
Racist chant? Give us a break already!
Its not very smart either, being that Puerto Ricans dont need green cards.
