Elderly travelers to get break on searches at Orlando International Airport

Starting Monday, travelers over age 75 at Orlando International Airport and three others nationwide will get a break at security checkpoints under a test program that could allow them to keep their shoes and light jackets on and skip pat-downs.

The new guidelines announced Wednesday by the Transportation Security Administration are part of an effort to move away from its one-size-fits-all security procedures and speed lower-risk passengers through while focusing on those who may need more scrutiny. Similar changes were made last fall for travelers 12 and younger.

My parents live in “The Villages,” and Orlando is their airport. I was going to drive down there (from Charlotte, NC) in May, but she told me to fly and is buying the ticket, so now I’ll have to deal with TSA for the first time in over three years, packing a 4-month-old baby. Unnngh.

Driving would have been better, but it’s true there’s nothing for my 15-year-old son, who would have been the co-driver, to do there while I hang out with my dad in the last months he’ll recognize me.

So sorry about your Dad.

It is something people my age see far too often, and dread.

Have a wonderful trip,

Sick, but I'm still laughing 5 minutes later! One more thing that the TSA gropers look forward to experiencing...

TSA to be Evicted from Major U.S. Airport
Filed under
Constitution, Government, National Security

One of America’s busiest airports, Orlando Sanford International, has announced it will opt out of using TSA workers to screen passengers, a move which threatens the highly unpopular federal agency’s role in other airports across the nation.

“The president of the airport said Tuesday that he would apply again to use private operators to screen passengers, using federal standards and oversight,” reports the Miami Herald.

With Sanford International having originally been prevented by the TSA from opting out back in November 2010 when the federal agency froze the ability for airports to use their own private screeners,a law passed by the Senate last month forces the TSA to reconsider applications.
