Updated 9:55 p.m. -- Rick Santorum was projected to win the Alabama Republican primary as he, Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich were locked in a three-way battle to win Mississippi's primary.
Mitt Romney was left looking to Mississippi to achieve a feat he hadn’t yet accomplished this cycle – win in one of the Republican Party’s conservative strongholds – as results from the twin primaries in GOP strongholds trickled in Tuesday evening.
Almost two hours after polls closed, the race in Mississippi was too close to call.
A week after Super Tuesday, the Alabama and Mississippi primaries could determine whether Romney was able to finally win in one of the GOP’s identifiably conservative corners.
Any such victory would come, in part, due to a split conservative vote between former House Speaker Newt Gingrich and former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum. The two men have battled Romney – and each other – in a week’s worth campaigning in two states where the electorate closely mirrors some of the modern Republican Party’s core constituencies.
Santorum had also looked to win at least one of the two primaries, if not deprive Gingrich from victories in either. Santorum has publicly said he hopes to wage a one-on-one campaign against Romney, and has split the conservative vote versus the former Massachusetts governor with Gingrich in several key contests.

Would have rather had Newt win it, but at least the pro-abortion, pro-homo marriage liberal from Mass didn’t win.
Nor do I. Newt’s PAC was running ads on our local radio station on the drive home. And out primary isn’t for another six weeks.

IMHO, this result is telling me that the south has had all of Barry’s crap they are going to take. They aren’t in the mood for Marxists OR RINOS. Good!

Since it's not Mitt, there is no question of gaming the system...but Santorum is simply not a varsity player yet.

I cant either. But, if I were Newt and I decided to pull out, I would state that it will depend entirely what the others say about my exit, and that would determine who I would throw my support behind.
I would send a very strong signal that if any of the two front runners said one harsh word, then those that did would find that it would be a very big mistake and cost them the election, both in the primary nomination and the general election.
Sour grapes? You bet! But the childlike slimming of other candidates through Super PAC adds had better stop.
I would have really preferred Newt, but I think it’s over tonight unless he wins at least one state tonight.
Bummer. Just got to keep Romney out of it.
Sad thing is, I think Newt will keep going at this until July before dropping out.
God save the republic. I don’t know what is wrong with the people who vote for Little Ricky. I can understand the Romney voters. They are either moderate republicans or are buying the, only Mitt can win, story. But Santorum is a loser of the highest degree. Prior to his three nothing wins in MN, CO, MO he was a well justified after thought. Now we have 30+% of evidently brain dead conservative voting for him in every state. A far right extremely arrogant SoCon who is a moderate establishment republican on everything else. A Democratic wet dream. They are probably popping champagne bottles every time this twit wins. I hope Newt stays in just to keep Santorum from gaining anymore ground. At this point we better be praying for a brokered convention.
Then why are they voting for establishment “take one for the team” Ricky.
And what’s frustrating is Santorum is a loser who ultimately can’t win elections....and this is our champion?
I just don’t get it. I like some of his positions better than Newt, but I like a lot of Newt better simply because he can campaign.
At least I thought....his campaign has been frankly terrible so far.
SO much better to have Newt or Rick take these states.

The "win" is bragging rights, nothing more.
It is certainly sad the establishment has fooled the electorate. Sadder still Santorum hasn't been properly vetted.
