Herewith a photo of my Uncle Jack as a Captain during the Korean War:
Captain John T. Dowd, USA, 101st Airborne Div., Korea, 1952
One of the principal members of my family pantheon, he served in WWII, Korea and Vietnam before retiring in 1962. Afterwards, he served as Superintendent of the U.S. National Cemeteries in Annapolis, Md ,Winchester, VA and Hampton, VA.
He is interred among his comrades in the Hallowed Precincts of the Arlington National Cemetery along with his wife, the inestimable Virginia Gavin Dowd, who stood by him through a half century of marriage and who was one of the most elegant ladies I have ever met.
In my late teens I used to drive my motorcycle up the road to Annapolis where he was then Superintendent of the Cemetery, and spent many a fine day and evening in their company. Lord, how I miss them after all these years!
Nos genuflectitur ad non princeps sed Princeps Pacem!
Listen, O isles, unto me; and hearken, ye people, from far; The LORD hath called me from the womb; from the bowels of my mother hath he made mention of my name. (Isaiah 49:1 KJV)
Our thanks to Captain John T. Dowd, USA, 101st Airborne Div...Uncle Jack...for his service to our country.
