Poll: Most New Yorkers say Muslims treated fairly

Most voters in New York City have no problem with the way the police department has treated Muslims, a poll showed Tuesday, despite weeks of criticism leveled against the NYPD's counterterrorism program by Muslim activists and out-of-state politicians.

A series of articles by The Associated Press has revealed how the police department conducted surveillance of Muslim communities, infiltrating student groups, monitoring the Web activity of college students, taking notes at mosques and eavesdropping at cafes and grocery stores.

A poll conducted by Quinnipiac University after the latest stories found that 58 percent of city voters surveyed believe the department has treated Muslims fairly, while 29 percent think police were unfair and 13 percent didn't know or had no answer. Overall, 82 percent believe the NYPD has been effective in its counterterrorism efforts.

"New Yorkers overwhelmingly think their police are going a good job of protecting against terrorism, and they don't believe they're picking on Muslims," said Maurice Carroll, director of the university's polling institute.

The poll showed a slight increase from last month - five percentage points - in the number of New Yorkers who believe the police have acted inappropriately. Carroll said that was probably due to a burst of publicity after the AP disclosed last month that the surveillance had extended far beyond the city limits.

Internal NYPD documents show the department's Intelligence unit cataloged and eavesdropped in Muslim-owned businesses in New Jersey and on New York's Long Island. They collected license plate numbers outside a mosque in Paterson, N.J., and noted the names of people who posted on student websites at colleges as far away as Buffalo, N.Y.

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie accused the NYPD of acting like "masters of the universe" by casing his state. The head of the FBI in Newark, N.J., warned that...

I don’t think they’re treated fairly? Compared to U. S. Citizens they’re treated preferentially.

If Christian Preachers were delivering the same sorts of messages the Imams are, they’d be in prison in short order.

If a number of Christian men were to stand up in the middle of a full aircraft and pray out loud in unison, they’d spend time in prison. They most certainly would not have charges dropped, and get an apology.

If Christian’s wanted to hide their faces while going through security or loading an aircraft, they’d be refused boarding privileges.

Christians are now profiled. Islamic adherents are not.

Who conducts terrorism? White women, grandmothers, and children? One White guy does anything wrong, and it’s then reason why every white guy must be searched in perpetuity. No sale.

Don’t talk to me about fairly. (not a personal comment to you BTW)

I’d like to see what would happen if an imam said that women who reveal their faces are “sluts”.

Oh, wait. We already know: Nothing happens.

My favorite Islamic tenet, is that as an Islamic adherent you can rape an Islamic woman then stone her for being a sinner, while you go on your merry little way. And lets not forget that you can do the same thing if she reveals her face in public.

Talk about your religion of mercy...

And Christian men are frequently framed as being anti-women.

Women’s libers talk about White men, and Islamic men are evidently above reproach.

No racism involved of course...

The media types who are outraged by this apparently do not understand the difference between investigating a crime (which has already happened) and intelligence gathering to prevent attacks before they happen.

Far as I can tell, the NYPD is just doing the job DHS won’t do...
