If Mitt Romney wins the Republican presidential nomination, he'll have many options for a running mate. His current rival Rick Santorum probably won't be one of them.
Romney said as much Tuesday when Neil Cavuto asked him on Fox Business if he would choose a candidate to his right in order to win the election.
"Well that would preclude, of course, Rick Santorum," Romney said. "Because I mean look at his record. I find it interesting that he continues to describe himself as the real conservative.

Santorum on ‘the Imaginary World of Mitt Romney’s Ideology’
By Jonathan Karl | ABC News
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Rick Santorum lashed out at Mitt Romney as “sad,” “desperate” and living in an “imaginary world” for suggesting he is too liberal to be Romney’s running mate should the former Massachusetts governor become the Republican presidential nominee.
“I’m too liberal?” Santorum said in an interview with ABC News. “This is the imaginary world of Mitt Romney’s ideology. It’s just sad.”
Calling Romney “one of the most liberal records ever to run in the post-Reagan era for president,” Santorum said: “If I am too liberal to be Mitt Romney’s running mate, oh my goodness. That just tells you how desperate he is.”
Santorum was referring to an interview Romney did Monday with Neil Cavuto on Fox News. Cavuto asked Romney whether he would have to pick a running mate more conservative than he is to satisfy Republicans who think he is too moderate.
“That would preclude, of course, Rick Santorum,” Romney told Cavuto. “Rick Santorum is not a person who is an economic conservative to my right.”
Romney added: “I give him credit for being a conservative, but not a fiscal conservative. His record suggests that he does not have the fiscal conservative chops that I have.”
Romney also told Cavuto that a drawn-out nomination battle that went all the way to the Republican convention in August would doom the party’s chances of beating Barack Obama.
“If we go all the way to the convention, we would signal our doom in terms of replacing President Obama,” Romney said.
It would take a miracle for Santorum to win the nomination, Romney said.
“If he is able to pull off a miracle, so be it, he’ll be the nominee,” Romney said. “You’re going to see me getting the delegates I need to become the nominee and we sure as heck aren’t going to go to the convention all the way to the end of August to select a nominee.”
Asked about that, Santorum told ABC News: “You know, maybe he should start making the case for why he should be elected as opposed to playing all these math and convention games.”
I don't know what he is, but I know what he isn't, a conservative.
Thank you for redirecting. Really, I appreciate it.
I was sitting here stunned, once again, to Santorum’s extreme ordinary-NESS topped off by his noticeably thin skin, and simply could not resist RAILING.
I will try to do better. (Through tomorrow. tee hee.)
Brit Hume, whom I once respected greatly, has been so in the bag for Mitt that I wonder if he’s getting paid off.
Well, according to the GOP-e consultants, in order to win the independents, his running mate will have to be a half-black, half-Native American, transgendered lesbian ACLU lawyer.
That’s Romney’s management style - pay consultants huge salaries and then do exactly what they tell you.
It’s the crowd he runs with. I don’t think it’s exactly a conspiracy. I think it’s just group-think.
nobody would have bought that anyway
Good point...however, it shows when push comes to shove, he’s a useful idiot for them.
Too bad actually.
This is actually great news and so dumb on Romney’s part. Romney has just kicked the Tea Party, Santorum and by implication Gingrich followers all in the nuts by failing to consider Santorum for VP, rubbing salt by calling him not conservative. How is Romney electable after he has dissed the base?
Britt Hume. Astonishing misdirection by Britt Hume (of all people with brains) was such a shock for me.
Something strange is happening when perfectly sane, practical and savy conservative thinkers fall like this, to be trapped in the small picture.
The FAUX conservatives now see no evil, hear no evil and speak [of] no evil, no longer fighters first for the Constitution, nevermind the phenominal advancment of tyranny, by hook, crook and insidious manipulation of our freedom and liberty and institutions by even the un-elected.
Bet you’re sorry you brought it up. Ha! Rita
Dear Ricky, guess what...you’ve officially been PWNED!
You most certainly have little Ricky pegged. I couldn’t agree more with what you describe.
Don’t you think Rick is in the dumps but totally today?
Surely he sees that he is not after all in the league of extraordinary gentlemen to finish this thing.
There he sits; looking at the writing on the wall, the certainty that he has blown (with his own mouth) any chance to share the Romney ticket, and that if he doesn’t shut up and stop the squealing against every little thing he will soon be staring as a deer in headlights at the GOP-E machine coming down at him out, and publically now as in out-in-the-open.
Look for a few RINOs to come out and begin dropping little boomlits against Rick, certainly after Texas.
They want this over in June. Texas is May 29.
Just pray he stays in to convention. He is so moody, one can’t count on it.
>>Ive already decided that if Romney is the nominee, I will be voting third party, regardless of who his running mate is.<<
Yea, that’s a real “Rational Thought”. Apparently you don’t know how bad Obama is for the future of our country let alone him having a lasting legacy of getting to choose 2-3 Supreme Court judges.
If Romney is going to be our nominee.. then I would much rather he took another RINO down with him to the loser hall of fame.
maybe Romney/Graham?
or...
Romney/Christie?
I would just hate to see Romney take down one of our rising conservative stars with his sinking ship.
Santorum may be offered a position as the White House chaplain
And notice the same old bunch of Santorum-haters here continue to be completely preoccupied with bashing and smearing “little Ricky” while Romney now quietly appears to be within striking distance of pulling off an upset win in Mississippi and/or Alabama tonight. I’m beginning to suspect some of these folks would be more upset with Santorum as president than with Romney or even four more years of Obama in the Oval Office. It’s disgusting!
