One can't possibly imagine what it must be like to serve in such a chaotic situation. The people are hostile, the government is incomprehensible, our own Commander-in-Chief is not behind our troops and we have announced we have a disoriented mission and no path to success, so we're leaving soon.

Every soldier there must be wondering why and if they may soon die for no reason.

“Every soldier there must be wondering why and if they may soon die for no reason.”

Speaking of Reason, I doubt we will ever be allowed to know what that soldier’s reason was for doing what “he” (one of the few things the bbc story makes clear) did.

I do not rule out any possibility.

our own Commander-in-Chief is not behind our troops

And therein lies the biggest problem.
