Families' exodus leaves S.F. with lowest pct. of children in U.S.
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | 3/9/12 | Heather Knight

Posted on 03/09/2012 7:37:04 AM PST by SmithL

Last year, a family of three earning $111,000 a year could afford just 23 percent of homes for sale in San Francisco - mostly in southern neighborhoods, including Bayview-Hunters Point.

The median price of a house in the city in 2010 was $668,000. Just 2 percent of new housing units built in the city since 2001 are single-family, detached homes.

These were just a few of the scores of statistics presented at a special Board of Supervisors hearing Thursday to help explain why San Francisco is bleeding families with children - losing 5,278 people younger than 18 between 2000 and 2010, according to census figures.

There are actually about 3,000 more children younger than 5 in the city than there were in 2000, but about 8,000 fewer school-age youths.

The flight of families with children - particularly middle-income and African American families - is leaving San Francisco older, whiter and richer. That has concerned city officials and family advocates who say families with children are essential to a diverse, thriving city.

Keeping city diverse

"This has been a personal issue for me for quite some time," said Supervisor Mark Farrell, who called the hearing and said his two young children are losing lots of their friends to the suburbs - and that his own adult friends are increasingly moving.

"Keeping families in San Francisco is important for a diverse city," he said. "Having children in our parks and our schools and strollers on our sidewalks is important to the vibrancy of our neighborhoods."

Liberal Ameritopians see EVERYTHING through the prism of racial identity.

Shortened:

Liberals are racists.

Correction:

The flight of families with children - particularly middle-income and African American families - is leaving San Francisco older, whiter, richer and gayer.

You can leave, but you will have to leave your children behind to be adopted by and artist and his dancer boyfriend.

Of course they are; it makes recruitment more difficult.

San Francisco, Like Manhattan is an adult playground, but there is no way in hell I would ever think of raising children in either of those places.

I maintain that anybody who deliberately takes a child into San Fransicko should be jailed for child abuse.

What is the problem? This is precisely what the Gay Mafia wants. Get rid of those “breeders”.

This liberal city has done so much to accomodate a steady parade of kooks and crackpots and gays and assorted liberal types over the years.

Now, they are having liberal angst about families with children not wanting to live in the environment they have created? They want, dare I say, “normal” or “mainstream” families with children to live in their community, after they have done so much to make their city unfriendly to families?????

This city, which does so much for “tolerance” of the most bizarre people, is concerned that some people are voting with their feet, and deciding to live elsewhere???

Is this satire or is it real?

Wife and I spent a week in San Diego (she at a convention; me along for the ride.) We saw the Midway, Balboa Park and the Zoo.
I have to say we were nearly overrun by baby strollers at the zoo. Plenty of families in California, just further south...

These same people, who now have their liberal angst about families with children leaving S.F., would be the loudest to condemn these same families, when complaints are made about the public behavior of certain “gay” men.

These same liberal types will condemn the families as being “homophobic”, etc. if they say anything about the “gay” culture and the environment of S.F. So why do they want them around in the first place? The more “normal” people who leave, that leaves S.F. more gay, more adult, more liberal, with fewer people to complain about their “tolerance” of the bizarre in that city.

Why again do they want families with children to stay?
