Rick Santorum's campaign is calling on conservatives to pressure Newt Gingrich to abandon his bid for the White House, a senior adviser told reporters tonight.
Senior campaign strategist John Brabender said the key for the campaign going forward will be creating an opportunity to challenge Mitt Romney one-on-one, though Brabender maintained the Santorum campaign would not directly call on Gingrich to drop out of the race.
"We're never going to call on anybody to get out, but what we are calling is on Tea Party supporters and conservatives is to rally behind the only candidate that has demonstrated over and over again that he's the one who can compete against Mitt Romney," Brabender said.
"The real key right now is, can we get an opportunity to get a one-on-one shot with Mitt Romney," he said.

Newspapers? Wow! Most of ours around here are nothing but liberal rags. .
Having said that, what we have to choose from this go around is sort of disappointing. Having said that, I will crawl over broken glass to vote for ANYONE BUY OBAMA. In my opinion, he lies when it would be easier to tell the truth, rat-a-tat-tat, machine gun style. “Keep ‘em off balance” seems to be his motto.
I’m not excited about Romney, not excited about the serial adulterer Newt, not ecstatic about Santorum, but Obama puts them all in the shade.
Interesting insult there.
Perhaps you agree with the Washington Post's offensive comment from 1993 that conservative Christians are "largely poor, uneducated and easily led"?
Painting voters for a candidate with a broad brush of “not smart enough” does not seem like a tremendously intelligent thing to do for a conservative Republican.
For those who want a historical background to understand a bit about why evangelicals often get angry at comments like this, read this article analyzing Sarah Palin's anger at those who mocked her faith: http://www.usatoday.com/printedition/news/20110411/column11_st.art.htm
You'll get no disagreement from me that the near-miss losses of Santorum in Michigan and now Ohio are extremely unfortunate. A Michigan win by Santorum could potentially have knocked Romney out of the race. An Ohio loss would have done serious damage to Romney and given Santorum tremendous help. I'm no more happy than you that he lost both states by narrow margins.
But to argue that Santorum may have deliberately lost those states seems very unlikely.
I want to encourage everyone to research the candidates. We shouldn’t vote for someone just because they aren’t Obama. Many people voted for Jimmy Carter in 1976 because he wasn’t Gerald Ford!
I despise Romney!
Exit polls in Ohio indicated that Romney is getting moderates and dissatisfied Democrats, liberals who will not vote for a do-over by BHO2.
I suspect that is why the GOPe have been promoting Romney. As he was a liberal-governing Massachusetts, he can attract liberal Democrats away from BHO2.
For Romney, and Wall Street in particular, are Globalists who care not a wit for conservative values. First and foremost, they see themselves as world citizens, responsible for maintaining peace and security world-wide through commerce. And of course, getting rich is important, too, as it keeps the military machine primed and ready to maintain the all important security overseas.
Unfortunately, that military is paid for by tax revenue and staffed by the sons and daughters of people who no longer have jobs, as those have all been moved offshore by the above mentioned “world citizens”.
For those who do not know what Im talking about, heres a quick primer.
This election in 2012 is all about money, power, and who will eventually wield both here at home and internationally.
Gov.Mitt Romney is the candidate for the elitist Republicans who are, in essense, supporters of Globalism.
Wall Streets business model is international in scope and must have security overseas in order for commerce to thrive. In an attempt to dominate international commerce AND the monetary structure, the U.S.A. must project military strength world wide. This is neither conservative nor liberal in orientation and both Democrats and Republicans have been involved over the decades.
Until Obama arrived on the scene. He’s all about Global Social Justice (communism) which means redistributing wealth.
The only thing that matters to Republican Globalists is making money for themselves. They dont give a damn about the rights of individuals. The common man or woman on the street is just a unit to be taxed or obliterated, it matters not to them.
The last thing they want is for conservatives with Bibles and guns asserting their God-given rights and demanding that Washington, D.C., changes how it does business.
Senator Rick Santorum made big bucks selling his ability to get legislation passed for the Globalists above. For the past month I’ve been researching this man and he is not the staunch conservative he wants all of us to believe.
Ron Paul is a shill for Romney. Many Texans are embarrassed now, as they believed Paul’s lies.
Newt Gingrich has promised to change how Washington, D.C., does business.
The U.S. is $16 TRILLION DOLLARS IN DEBT. The five major banks in this nation are holding European debt instruments valued at $250 TRILLION DOLLARS. When, not if, those debt instruments default, those five U.S. banks will collapse. Neither Romney nor Santorum have a plan on how to get us out of debt.
Newt Gingrich does, and it involves this nation becoming energy independent. He laid it all out in a speech to Republicans in San Francisco, February 26, 2012.
I strongly suggest that people backing Santorum here on Free Republic deeply research Rick Santorum. When he first ran for Congress he claimed to be pro-abortion and posed as the anti-Reagan. People do change, I know that. But character rarely does, if ever.
Well the hell should the republican party bother to have a primary at all? Should we just trust the Washington Republican establishment types, the elite media, the rich and powerful to get together and choose who we sheeple should just blindly get behind? Is that what you are saying? We are all stupid out here and cant weed through the research and make a better choice?
There are still +=25 states that have not voted yet. They dont count? All we want is the opportunity to make our choices? Our voices don’t matter? Let the liberal east coast and west coast stomp out our right to choose? Let’s face it, before even one vote was counted...Romney was declared the inevitable nominee! How is that fair? How is that American?
Why are the voices of the independents and democrats coming into our primary process more important than those of us that are true Republicans. Look at the numbers in the most liberal states, even in Florida. Romney won because of them, not because Republicans chose him.
How about this...next time around, we start by making all the Republican primaries, for Republicans only? How about we begin in Kansas and go throughout the “fly-over states” and those states they never get to choose and announce that the race over before any of the east or west coast liberals have their say? Would that be fair? Does a candidate have to start 4 years in advance, and have 200+ million dollars before they can even enter the race? The entire process is pure crap and we all know it.
How can the Tea Party back Romney or Santorum with their voting records? The media is making a joke out of the word Conservative. How can Santorum bail in 2008, endorse Romney over McCain, then be given the opportunity to run against him all by himself against Romney? Everyone has given Santorum a pass for his poor judgment, and now conveniently not allow Mr. Newt the opportunity to fight back with his incredible record of achievement and his incredible plans for this country. I bet you wont see Newt backing Romney just to hurt Santorum. However, when things get tight, Santorum will again roll over for the first job offer that Romney offers him. There is no proof that Mr. Newt is unelectable. Yet, there is a great deal of proof that Santorum will cave and go whimpering home. He did it before.
Romney and the establishment started the bombardment of negative ads against Newt with over $35 million. Yet, he came in 2ne in Nevada, and has placed in many of the contests. Why dont you demand Paul get out? Last night proved Mr. Newt is beginning to dig himself out of the canyon those negative ads put him in. Santorum was up 18 in Ohio and lost it. That makes him more electable than Mr. Newt? Barbara Bush said this campaign was getting so nasty, and it was her candidate Romney who started all that nasty advertising. When Mr. Newt merely tried to defend himself, he was the one blamed for getting nasty. Should he not have even tried to defend his record against the lies and misinformation? When Romney fights back he is courageous. HELLO! WE ARE NOT STUPID! Mr. Newt should have the opportunity to overcome it, and should stay in as long as he wants. Romney will be crushed by Obama and everyone is now trying to clear the path for him so they can begin to make him something he is not. He will take on Mr. Newts ideas and call them his own. His tax plan is pure crap, as is Santorums.
Santorum does not have a chance of beating Romney, nor Obama. There is just enormous evidence out there to prove that, his voting record is clearly not conservative, is everyone blind? Both Romney and Santorum are Obama light. They have voted similarly on many of the same liberal programs. Republicans in the Senate and House are cowards. Not all, but the majority are happy to just be in control of their committee chairmanships. Romney chose to not only get Newt out of the race, but to destroy him forever. Mr. Newt is a fighter with great solutions and a real economic plan. Cantor gets on Meet the Press Sunday and says Romney is the only one that has a plan.
Mr. Newt should stay in this and fight it out all the way to the convention. I did not agree with Newt in South Carolina when he asked Santorum to get out, and I certainly do not agree that Santorum has the right to ask Newt to get out. Between the two of them, they have more support that Romney. Why doesn’t anyone ask Romney to get out and let Mr. Newt and Santorum fight on an even scale?
EAGLES UP MR. NEWT! STAND AND FIGHT FOR WE THE PEOPLE!
And, if it is Santorum and Romney left in the race?
Praying for Santorum to win.
Me, too.
I thought it would be better for Santorum to step out with low support from public in the earlier months, but with more delegates in his hands, and Gingrich is behind, I now believe it will be more realistic for Gingrich to step out and unite with Santorum. It is time for either to step down, and the candidate that will have more chance to win against Romney is Santorum which has prove his strength with more delegates. Gingrich will be a good Vice President to pull the string, while Santorum as President will lay out the strategic policies based on conservative values.
By the way, in the earlier days, Freepers were crying the candidates are not conservative enough, and when the most conservative figure Santorum gains an advantage, some people registered on Free Republic began to claim family and religious values should be personal. This is double standard, and I blame there are psyops being played here to kick out conservative candidates from the race.
It will be decided long before the convention because it always is. Neither Santorum nor Gingrich can win at this point. The die is cast.
Isn't that exactly what is happening? With Santorum shut out in GA, the division will continue.
It will be decided long before the convention because it always is. Neither Santorum nor Gingrich can win at this point. The die is cast.I'm afraid you are right. Conservatives are too divided, too unable to unite for the common good.
I suggested a while ago that Palin make the call and that we all support who she endorses, but:
a) I was roundly criticized for even making such a suggestion and
b) Palin never stepped up and made an out-and-out endorsement. (And she would have had to do so early enough to matter.)
Romney figured we would be unable to unite, and he was right.
For the record, I supported:
Perry until he became non-viable.
Gingrich until his surge ended.
Most recently, Santorum.
But now I believe Santorum has failed his own test and I'm back in the Gingrich camp.
Not that it matters much.
As you say, the die is cast.
Credible and realistic reasons are a matter of perspective.
If the goal is to indeed unseat 0 as well as put the US back on the right track to prosperity, then it is painfully obvious what needs to be done.
Realistically:
Romney lacks Credibility, Honor, and Integrity. He knows or should know there is no way he can go toe to toe with 0 and come out a winner. Too much baggage policy-wise.
Santorum is an attorney. Need I say more.
Gingrich has successfully dealt with the n’er-do-well types that currently infest DC. In addition, he has a rather solid track record on the issues that matter most to genuine conservatives. Furthermore, he can and will rip 0 a new one in the debates. This will show everyone that the emperor is indeed naked. Oh.... perish the thought.
The only destructive forces at work are the same ones that genuine conservatives have been up against since day one. Suffice it to say, the main culprits are the MSM as well as mans’ own arrogance, greed, and lust for power.
IMHO, Santorum “owes his mentor” for the backstabbing he inflicted upon him. He should drop out and throw his full support behind Newt. So much for Loyalty, Honor and Integrity..... eh.
Hey... wait a minute... Loyalty, Honor, and Integrity. Are these not part of our founding principles? Hmmm....
Anyone with at least half of a fully functioning brain should have already concluded who We The People need to send up against the Chicago machine.
Pray for Newt.
Santorum has always been out for himself. Every time we are forced to listen to his rhetoric, it is always about him; About his past, how he single handedly authored Welfare Reform during the Clinton years, etc,, (When it was Dole who made an unprecedented move and let a junior Senator (Sanorum) take the floor) and there were many Reps and Senators who actually “authored” the bill, with the original idea being Newt Gingrich's’ in the first place. (Contract With America)
Santorum is a Big Labor, Big Government Moderate who is lying through his teeth. He is an impostor, a phony and a FRAUD! Need I say more?
Rick and Newt should join forces. Both would even each other out nicely.
Rick is over playing his hand now and should shut his piehole unless he is attacking Obama or Mitt.
I dont care who is VP or POTUS between the two, as long as I dont have to need shower after voting for Mitt like I did for McCain.
