....Across the state, turnouts were minimal.
At a precinct less than two miles from Gingrichs McLean home, the election went largely unnoticed. Only 30 of the precincts more than 3,000 voters had cast ballots by 10 a.m. A few miles away in Falls Church, voter Darren Ewing was frustrated that Virginias election laws did not allow him to write in Gingrichs name, so he reluctantly voted for Paul.
Gingrich may not be the most polished candidate, but hes a candidate with a vision and a track record of implementing significant changes, said Ewing, 41, a financial adviser.
At Gov. Bob McDonnells polling place in heavily Democratic downtown Richmond, he and his wife, Maureen, were voters No. 7 and 8 when they cast ballots at 9:30 a.m.
McDonnell, who has been considered a possible vice presidential prospect should Romney win the nomination, had announced plans to vote at 11:15 a.m. But he abruptly moved it up Tuesday morning to avoid abortion-rights protesters outside the voting precinct.
After voting, McDonnell lamented the lack of a competitive Virginia primary, where statewide candidates must gather 10,000 valid registered voters signatures, including at least 400 from each congressional district.
As Ive said many times, if youre going to be president of the United States, you ought to be able to get 10,000 signatures in Virginia, he said.....

This is a travesty of the State GOP’s creation. I hope they learn their lesson quickly. We the grass roots are not pleased. My precinct’s turnout was abysmal this morning.
Good, hope the Commonwealth's GOP Mitt buttboys get run out of Tampa for disenfranchising Virginia's conservative voters.

The state party made certain Rick Perry, Newt Gingrich and others were off of that ballot. No matter, the RNC cannot wash the stint off of Romney. He may win Ohio tonight, but it doesn't change things; a huge portion of the independents and conservatives do not support him no matter how the media plots and spins, along with pushing their manufactured exist polling to help Romney. The media will be in a love fest for Mitt. Be prepared everyone and stay strong. I want to see Newt in Tampa to take on the party.
This is good news because you know the Paulbots will vote. I would love it if Ron Paul beat Romney in VA. I’m not a Paul supporter but to demoralize and slow down the Romney machine...OH HELL YES!!!
Did Paul spend any time campaigning in VA?
My precincts turnout was abysmal this morning.

Well, my friend, I could say: “I’m sorry”, but I’m not. That means the Romney people are not turning out and that the Paul people are turning out, buecause they are fanatics and see this as an opportunity for their guy to finally win a Primary. Also, I’m hoping that the Santorum and Gingrich people who are going to vote for Paul to slow down RINO-Rom, because their guy is not on the ballot, are turning out as well. This is good news.
Very smart words. The VA Republican party should not get away with this.
I am a Gingrich/Santorum supporter and held my nose while I voted for Roach Gall this morning to send a message to the establishment.
If this was an on-line poll he would win by a landslide.
This is a great opportunity for the Gingrich / Santorum supporters in VA to vote for Kook-daddy and hand RINO-Rom an embarrassing defeat. Why the hell won’t they do it?
Imagine - a state’s entire delegation is going to one of the two least conservative candidates in the running, and whoever wins them will do so with single-digits of their own Party’s vote.
“Travesty” doesn’t begin to describe this mess.
Good strategy, given the situation.
What kind of election doesn't allow write-ins? Sheesh!
The convention should refuse to seat the Virginia delegation.
Wife and I voted at our Fairfax County VA polling place this morning around 10 AM. We were the only voters there, and were outnumbered about 4:1 by the election workers.
I pulled the lever (well, at least touched the touch-screen) for Ron Paul. Wife isn’t saying who her pick was, but I’m pretty sure it was not RP.
I talked to a precinct worker were I voted and he said they expected around a 2% turnout. The lowest they could ever remember.
Good for you, protest to the party. I think my son did the same thing today. I think his wife went with the other guy.
I hope the turnout is low to hurt Romney.
The question is why isn’t Ron Paul urging people to vote for him as the only not-Romney in the race?
Ron Paul had a real chance to win this state, and just ignored it.
The state party made certain Rick Perry, Newt Gingrich and others were off of that ballot.
How long has this particular primary requirement been on the books? Was it just adopted for this primary season?
