I'm referring, of course, to the new Las Vegas City Hall.
City officials, led by Mayor Carolyn Goodman, have been putting out a ridiculous talking point, bragging that the new city hall will save Las Vegas $400,000 a year in energy costs.
"This is an incredible night for us all," the mayor [Carolyn Goodman] said. The same talking point has also been in the RJ multiple times.*She said the energy efficient building, which features 33 "solar trees" in the front that generate electricity, will reduce the energy costs by more than $400,000 a year.
Now, we at NPRI are all about saving money, but that's not what's happening here. What Mayor Goodman fails to brag about is that city hall mortgage payments are going to grow from $3.5 million in Fiscal Year 2013 to annual payments of $13.4 million in FY 2017. To compare, the old city hall was paid off.
So savings of $400,000 a year will bring the net mortgage payment down to ... $13 million a year.

bit like the idiots which say they want to save money on gas so they go out and get rid of their paid off car in order to buy a 20 grand hybrid and now are in debt 20 grand but hey they think they look cool.
I actually heard one woman say she got the car to save her money but when I asked if she now has to buy the car and how long before she saves the money she looked all confused.
Liberalism is a disease which makes people not see the real world they live in.
Sorry to go off topic, but is this woman related to former Mayor Oscar Goodman? If so, it’s par for the course in that her husband was a long time defense lawyer/associate to the Scarfo mob in Philly.
What the heck. Vegas can afford it. What, with former mayor and Carolyn’s husband a “star” on CSI...
Sniff...
not sure but interesting question, if you find out could you please let me know.
Yes, she is his wife, ugh
Notice that it is largely, only government entities that are erecting new, expensive buildings these days.
Anyone else have a series of brand spanking new, state of the art Firehouses in their locale?
The fastest way to save energy costs is to have all the Casinos in Vegas cut their lights down the 1/2 between 1:00 am and sunrise!
This is such a good deal, the better build another city hall..................
So how many yrs before the investment pays off?
462 ? Solar-panel warranties are like 20yrs or something like that.
Seems foolish.

Liar.
I guarantee it. Even in solar ideal Las Vegas, NV.
true, but the casinos pay their own costs. City Hall ? The taxpayers
Government accounting.
If a private citizen or privately-owned company tried this, they’d be in prison.
One more instance of truth for thee but not for me.
That’s an ROI of only 462.5 years, so it’s a perfectly sensible Government decision.
love this.
Many people who live in the city are liberals, many purchase a condo etc with a view of the city and many love that view at night , all lit up an all.
Now the very same people preach , save the planet, go green, drive a golf cart disguised as a car on the road etc.
Now here’s a thought cut the light in those big building at night when not in use, turn off those bridge lights many cities have.
Oh wait the left will go bonkers over that, no sir can they do that , they’ll come out with excuses of “I paid an extra 500 grand for that view” or” the city is beautiful all lit up”
So I say save energy, cut off the lights when not in use in the city, are you with me now liberal city slackers?
thought not. You lot are just hypocrites
who is that the star on CSI?
thank you
