(CBS News) Republican presidential candidate Rep. Ron Paul said an apology by conservative talk radio host Rush Limbaugh to Georgetown Law student Sandra Fluke for calling her a "slut" and a "prostitute" was not sincere, and was made only because it best served Limbaugh.
On CBS News' "Face the Nation," the Texas congressman told host Bob Schieffer that Limbaugh's apology "was in his best interest."
"He's doing it because some people were taking their advertisements off of his program. It was his bottom line he was concerned about," Paul said.

I dont agree with Rush Limbaughs apology.
I don't either. That being said, I think he should have stopped at the "slut" thing, and not said any more, unless he was asked to elaborate, and then he could have simply made the point that she admitted it herself by announcing to the world that she was having so much sex she couldn't afford her birth control. Instead,he went further by saying she should "make a sex tape"....oops.
His apology should have gone something like,"Look, she put herself out there as such, and I simply reaffirmed what she herself had said. I stand by those words. The other stuff,ok,I was having a little too much fun,I guess, and I apologize for that."

I agree Rush had no personal need to apologize
He could have easily taken the them to a different level - and point out how this “poor girl” embarrassed herself was prostituted by the likes of Pelosi for a cheap political campaign.

I think losing Carbonite must have shocked him. He does the ads personally so it must be a HUGE account.

“...made only because it best served Limbaugh.”
So, when someone does something that is fully in keeping with the tenets of the Libertarian philosophy, Dr. Paul attacks? That would seem to seriously jeopardize his Libertarian credibility, IMO.

“To roll over and try to satisfy these leftists is totally unacceptable. Were she not a slut, she would not have made the ridiculous statements that she made in public.”
Rush didn’t roll over to satisfy leftists. that’s absurd. He apologized because he made a gross business error. He cannot fund his empire on donations. He needs major bucks from advertisers to stay on the air. He’s hoping he didn’t go too far this time and an apology will be enough. He has no evidence to prove anything against that silly woman. I would imagine a major settlement is being arranged as we speak. If he loses markets, he’ll find a way to be on the air somewhere, but it won’t be the same.

I have no idea how old you are, but when I was a child in the 1950s, there was this little character in the Superman comic books who had a very difficult name to pronounce because it was composed of random letters beginning with the letter X. He was a trouble maker and the only way to get rid of him was to pronounce his name correctly. Similar to the Rumplestiltskin story. It’s been many years since I’ve read Superman, but if my memory serves me correctly, he looked a like like Ron Paul. Maybe if we pronounce his name, he will disappear, just like Mr. X........

And if Rush hadn't apologized, I imagine Doc Paul would have ripped him, too.

Paul is an interesting character this season. He gets to point to the failings of everyone else and call names, but he's above it all. And they say Santorum’s sermonizing is insufferable. He reminds me of another great accuser that I hear about every Sunday.

I'm inclined to agree with Ron Paul on this. Limbaugh accomplished nothing with his apology except betraying the cause of conservativsm in ceding to his critics that WE have to watch our words while they are exempt from any such standard. The very least he could have done was to demand similar retractions from the likes of Bill Maher and Jon Stewart. Sauce for the goose and all that ...
His quick reversal demonstrates to me that he is less concerned with principle than profit. Which does not disqualify him as a beacon for conservative thought, although it does dim his light considerably, in my opinion.

Carrying Democrat water, and explaining the motives he would have for apologizing for an insult. Very efficient.
Generally, the reaction to Rush's apology is why one does not ever apologize for anything in politcs.

Well he’s right, isn’t he? Does anyone actually believe Limbaugh meant any of that apology?

He’s right, but what’s the point of Paul saying it? Sounds like he’s trying to help destroy Limbaugh’s credibility. Paul’s been working for the R establishment candidate in this campaign from the beginning, and they don’t like Limbaugh either.
