Santorum, Gingrich Target Obama at GOP Dinner in Ohio

By Seema Mehta

March 3, 2012 Bowling Green, Ohio— Rick Santorum and Newt Gingrich courted GOP activists at a party dinner Saturday night, each painting a dire picture of America's straits, arguing that the nation's very soul is at stake in this upcoming election and saying that they were the candidate best suited to take on President Obama.

Santorum, who delivered a fiery speech about the nation's heritage, clearly received the warmer reaction, with the hundreds of GOP voters gathered in a university student union leaping to their feet four times during his speech to give him a standing ovation.

He said that the United States is better than all other nations because it was founded on the premise that each person is granted rights not by the government but by God.

"We declared the truth, that all men are created equal and endowed by their creator with certain unalienable rights. Unalienable -- you can't take them away. They were given to you because you were created by God and each one has dignity and value," Santorum said. "…Where does that concept come from? Does it come from Islam? Does it come from other cultures around the world? Are men and women treated equally? Are adults and children treated equally? No. It comes from our culture and tradition -- the Judeo-Christian ethic, that is where this comes from, this sense of equality."

But Americans' rights and liberty are doomed if Obama's healthcare law goes into effect, he said.

Well it depends. Some of us find Gingrich humorous (as opposed to annoying) for proposing permanent lunar-based colonies within eight years and a Christmas in summer with $2.50/gal gas regardless of supply and demand, global energy markets, and unlinked to uncertain geo-political conditions in the middle-east.

He is a prissy prig.

Every time you bash Santorum Mitt Romney gains another percentage point. Is Mitt paying you well?

Santorum had a couple of terrific debates. And he never had a deer-in-the-headlights debate like Newt’s. Newt totally froze in that debate. It would only take one like that with Obama to destroy him.

You nailed it. And I'm sick of it. These people are killing us. Maybe FR isn't the world but they've definitely depressed any enthusiasm we've managed to muster on this board. I am seriously starting to wonder if they're not working for Romney. Why else the constant negative drumbeat?

The only one that can turn this country around is Newt - for starters, he will not keep ONE holdover from any current department. He will also no let the establishment dictate who is VP will be, nor his cabinet.

He has, more than once, mentioned Col. West for VP - he will not put in any Establishment - no foxes in the hen house.

That means Washington will NOT continue to operate as usual.

Under anyone else, it will. And little will change. Anyone who does not understand that most of the Republican base has also been infiltrated has been living with blinders on.

They must ALL be put out to pasture.

I’m trying very hard not to dislike Newt, but his supporters are making it nearly impossible. I have to keep reminding myself it’s not Newt himself posting these nasty comments, it’s people claiming to support him. Well, they’re lousy representatives for their candidate unless they’re trying to drive people away from Newt and toward Romney. Sorry to disappoint you, you nasty little vermin (not you, Kenny), it won’t work. I’m still voting for Santorum in April unless it looks like Newt has a better chance to beat Romney in Wisconsin.

All to no avail because Newt is un-electable and is now doing damage as the spoiler in key contests allowing the conservative vote to split and Romney shooting right through the breach to clinch the nomination. It’s Santorum or Romney.

Not true. Rick Santorum's #1 priority is to repeal Obamacare. That will do more to turn the country around than any other action. What should scare the hell out of any true conservative is that Romney is already backing away from that and will keep Obamacare in place.

So none of us should reject any candidate except Romney, he's the only unacceptable choice.

Seriously, I thought that was a misquote from Newt’s speech attributed to Santorum or that I read the article wrong. That sounds like virtually a direct quote from what Newt constantly says.

I guess not.

Lunar bases? Was that on message.
Did you watch Newt buckle on the global warming debate? And then right after do a commercial with Pelosi.

Come on. I like Newt and wish him and Rik could team up together to stop Mitt and then beat the snot out of BO in the general but yes he does concern me.

I know how you feel. These attack dogs are shooting themselves in the foot (unless they want Romney). I’m going to really start supporting Santorum now and hope it’s not too late. I’ve wasted a lot of time on this Newt pipe dream and I didn’t want to abandon either non-Romney but time’s up.

Maybe you think that because Newt expects the audience to raise their intellectual capacity to the level of the speech; he doesn’t try to dumb down the speech to meet the lowest common denominator intellect in the audience.

Santorum was almost unintelligible tonight in the Huckabee forum. This guy would lose to Obama based sheerly on people being too confused about what the heck he’s trying to say most of the time. This is a time when we are desperate to have a conservative voice explain the merits of our conservative philosophy to a public whose minds are addled with socialist and secular thought through the schools, media and government. No intelligent conservative can fail to recognize that Newt Gingrich is a gift from God and exactly the kind of skilled, articulate leader we need at this time in this country.

I try to keep in mind the axiom: Support the most conservative candidate in the primary who can win. That’s why I keep my option open to vote for Newt should he be in the better position in April. These Newt or no one fools are only helping Romney.

Let’s get behind Santorum, make calls for Ohio, send money, and help him over the line. It’s not too late.

Meanwhile, I don’t think ignoring the nasties is working so well so call them out. No Romney!!!
