March 1, 2012 Santorum Declares Georgia In Play

By Craig Schneider and Aaron Gould Sheinin The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Republican presidential hopeful Rick Santorum swept into Georgia Thursday searching for votes in a state that could be ripe for the picking.

Santorum, a former Pennsylvania senator, has moved into a solid second place in the state, according to recent polling, and said he believes he can shock the political world in the state's primary on Tuesday.

"There will be no bigger surprise than if on Super Tuesday Rick Santorum is the winner of the Georgia primary," Santorum said to about 100 supporters in a hangar at Peachtree-DeKalb Airport, where he campaigned following an event in Dalton. Afterward he boarded a plane bound for Washington state.

But, over the course of a 45-minute speech in Atlanta, Santorum focused squarely on contrasting himself with Mitt Romney, the former Massachusetts governor against whom he is battling for the lead nationally. Here in Georgia, Santorum leads Romney is recent polling but trails former Georgia congressman Newt Gingrich. Yet, Santorum barely referenced Gingrich.

He said it's difficult to travel to an opponent's home state and win. "There are good people in this race, but this race is narrowing down," he said, in an apparent reference to a two-man race between he and Romney.

"We need the people of Georgia to stand with the conservative," Santorum said.

Santorum's people like to throw around his conservative ratings. I find the actual votes to be more interesting as are his twisted, tortured explanations of same.

One thing is clear. When the party bosses came calling this principled man was willing to pi$$ on his principles if the price was right.

How do you know when he is going to compromise for some backroom deal?

Or take one for the "team"...

I could be severely wrong. We will know by this time March 6.

But I think Santorum is being played again. A gain of 8.3% in Ohio, -9% in Ga, & 21% in TN. None of these polls have been since the Michigan primary.

Around here(Dublin) no one is professing to be voting for Mittens, Very Very few is Professing to be voting for Santorum. Vast majority are voting for Newt.

Definitely not Scientific just the people I work with.

That would be a surprise. And when did Rick start talking in the 3rd person? I always think that sounds funny.

Santorum does have to compete in Georgia, because they are a proportional state, and if he keeps Romney below 20% they can possibly shut Romney out of delegates all together.

But I think he's just setting up an unreasonable expectation if he really said he expects to win the state. Just so long as Gingrich and Santorum win all the states they are currently leading, and that neither of them manage to pull down each other's numbers so much that Romney wins.

By ignoring reference to Gingrich, Santorum is speaking to reality (not permanent moon-based colonies or $2.50/gal gas) and saying that this is now a 2-man race and even in GA, a vote for Gingrich is a wasted vote.

That's exactly what Rick is thinking. He's trying to end this thing as quickly as possible.

No, he is living in a fantasy world.

While Newt is actually proposing solutions and Big Ideas, Santorum comes across as a great Social Conservative, but lacking in Fiscal Conservatism (as his voting record as Senator shows) and lacking in solutions.

The true fact about Gingrich. He hasn’t lived in GA for over a decade. He’s been a DC Boy for a while, living in VA, close to his real hometown, Washington DC.

The big surprise is going to be Santorum on ST. He will not win Ga. And I bet he loses TN and Ok and OH. Mitt will carpet bomb him in OH and Santorum is already fading because he lost his winner image after he failed to beat Romney , head to head in MI and AZ. Santorum is also suffering from the same reason he lost PA by 18 points in 06. His mouth is s lose cannon. Gingrich will be the comeback kid and will get another chance to go head to head against Mitt.

It’s really impossible. The statewide delegates are awarded proportionately with a 20% floor, so he’d have to win by enough to push everybody else below 20% in order to get all of those.

There are also 3 delegates per district, but to win all 3 you have to break 50%. He could well do that in a couple of districts, but it is highly unlikely he’ll take more than 50% in most, so someone will get 1 delegate out each 3 — hopefully Santorum, and not Romney.

It’s another case where what is best for Gingrich, or for Santorum, is not best for conservatives who just want Romney to get as few delegates as possible.

Gingrich would benefit if he could destroy Santorum in Georgia. It would mean Romney would get delegates, but even if Gingrich only picked up a 3rd of the Santorum support, it could push him above 50% in some districts.

Okay let me get this straight, the Santorum people have spent weeks telling the Gringrch people to vote for their guy to stop Romney in MI. Newt didn’t compete in MI. leaving the state to Santorum. Now that we are moving to GA where Newt has a huge lead and if Santorum would pull out Newt could shut Romney out of any delegates. So what is Little Ricky saying, I’m coming after you Newt. So much for reciprocity. Rick is prick (as are all the people who have been hounding the Gringrich people about MI) and you can quote me on that.

Gingrich as “come back kid”??

Where and how will he dump all that baggage that Prof. Sowell says is enough to fit into a commercial airliner?
