March 1, 2012 Santorum Declares Georgia In Play

By Craig Schneider and Aaron Gould Sheinin The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Republican presidential hopeful Rick Santorum swept into Georgia Thursday searching for votes in a state that could be ripe for the picking.

Santorum, a former Pennsylvania senator, has moved into a solid second place in the state, according to recent polling, and said he believes he can shock the political world in the state's primary on Tuesday.

"There will be no bigger surprise than if on Super Tuesday Rick Santorum is the winner of the Georgia primary," Santorum said to about 100 supporters in a hangar at Peachtree-DeKalb Airport, where he campaigned following an event in Dalton. Afterward he boarded a plane bound for Washington state.

But, over the course of a 45-minute speech in Atlanta, Santorum focused squarely on contrasting himself with Mitt Romney, the former Massachusetts governor against whom he is battling for the lead nationally. Here in Georgia, Santorum leads Romney is recent polling but trails former Georgia congressman Newt Gingrich. Yet, Santorum barely referenced Gingrich.

He said it's difficult to travel to an opponent's home state and win. "There are good people in this race, but this race is narrowing down," he said, in an apparent reference to a two-man race between he and Romney.

"We need the people of Georgia to stand with the conservative," Santorum said.

Eagles Up.

The internals are looking better by the day for GA, especially but a long row to hoe, a very difficult nut to crack but do-able. South of Atlanta, as well as Gainesville, around the I-85 corridor, Forest Park/Riverdale area, Gwinnett County, Dalton...etc. Its all going to come down to GOTV

Ohio, Tennesse, Oklahome, in the bag....etc. etc. It shall be a good Super Tuesday for Rick Santorum.

GA Republicans are never going to support a big union supporter like Santorum. Ga is a right to work state and we want to stay that way. We know Santorun does not like the right to work. He prefers union control over business.

Not correct.

When the Right-to-Work organization send Santorum a questionnaire, Santorum pledged to oppose compulsory union dues, support repeal of mandatory union representation for federal workers, oppose “card check” union elections, oppose “project labor agreements” requiring union wages even for non-unionized federal work, and took the Right-to-Work position on all five other issues in the questionnaire as well. What more does Gingrich expect from one who is attracting Reagan (union) Democrats and has the best chance of netting in critical rust-belt states into the red-states column come November.

Santorum may do well in big union states, but he in not going to capture any right to work states. They are right to work states for a reason. They want to work without union interference. Santorum wants union control.

Agreed - but these variable rules in different states are a pain. Goergia is proportional with a 20% minimum - meaning you have to get 20% to get your proportion. Still, it's VERY unlikely Newt will win big enough to grab all the delegates.

That's true. Too bad 'lil Ricky isn't the conservative in the race.

Same way he’s probably questioning the wisdom of courting “Reagan Democrats” in Michigan that actually turned out to be hardline union members organized by Dem strategist Joe DiSano.

Was that a vote based upon his beliefs and principles, or another one of votes of Washington political expediency? It’s tough to know which is which? How do you know when he is going to compromise for some backroom deal?

Does not compute.

Rick leads in polling in both Oklahoma and Tennessee.

These are both "right to work" states. So you see, there are exceptions.

I would not fall for a lot of that liberal narrative crap against Rick anyways. The guy has between an essentially an A-/B rating from the National Taxpayers Union, an A+ rating from the National Rifle Association, American Conservative Union — 88%, National Right to Life Committee — 100%, Americans for Tax Reform — 95%, National Tax Limitation Committee — 92%, League of Private Property Voters — 94% . Looks like his score from the anti-illegal alien Numbers USA is not that bad, too. Gingrich's comments and approach (compassionate conservatism) when it comes to illegal aliens in the United States are shocking and atrocious and are a continuation of George W. Bush, John McCain and Lindsay Graham, Juan Hernandez (advisor to McCain) at best. Your mileage may vary. PS As per my tag line, and perhaps except for a hiccup here such as on Arlen Sphinctor to be quite honest and open book here, FOR YEARS, Rick has been popular on Free Republic, so there is no rational justification for people to be so opposed to him how. He has not switched positions, THEY HAVE, for whatever reason. It is unsustainable as an argument.

Rick Santorum is the CONSERVATIVE FRONTRUNNER in the race for GOP nomination for President at present, including the delegate total to-date, leading the Speaker.

“I have no problem with private-sector unions,” Santorum said in his remarks on Thursday. “I think they play a role in society.”
