Obama Cabinet Secretary: 'The Private [Insurance] Market is in a Death Spiral'
CNS News ^ | February 29, 2012 | Fred Lucas

Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius told the House Ways and Means Committee on Tuesday that the days of private health insurance are coming to an end in the United States.

“The private market is in a death spiral,” Sebelius said, contending this would be the case whether or not President Barack Obama's health care law had been enacted.

At the Ways and Means hearing, Rep. Peter Roskam (R-Ill.) asked Sebelius about the administration’s assurances that people who liked their current health insurance plan would be able to keep it under the new law.

“How about when the president said you can keep your health care coverage, if you like it?” Roskam said. “And yet, the reality is, according to Bloomberg (News) at least, 9 percent fewer businesses are offering medical coverage than in 2010. There the rhetoric didn’t meet the reality, did it?”

Sebelius did not contest the numbers.

“Well again, congressman, what you’re seeing, it wouldn’t have mattered if we had passed the Affordable Care Act or not,” she said. “The private market is in a death spiral.”

Under President Obama's health-care law, all Americans will be required to purchase a government-approved health-care plan and those earning under 400 percent of the poverty level will be eligible for a federal subsidy to do it.

Later on Tuesday, in an address to the American Cancer Society’s Cancer Action Network, Sebelius discussed the “broken” health insurance system that Obamacare aims to fix.

Sebelius said that the next “important step” in implementing the president's health care plan is to establish “essential health benefits”--the basic package of coverage that the federal government will order all health insurance plans to cover.

The Affordable Care Act outlines 10 areas of basic coverage, including preventive services, prescription drugs, pediatric care and hospital services. The "preventive services" area is the one under which the administration has already ordered that all health insurance plans must cover sterilizations and all FDA-approved contraceptives, including those that induce abortions, without charging any fees or co-pay to insured workers and their dependents.

Or maybe Obama really wants single payer and knows that Obama-care leads to that with lots of mandates on insurance companies while the personal mandate is a joke making them raise premiums so more and more stop paying.

If we had an opposition party that was driving every-day that Obama-care was causing the problems we see today we would have a chance.

Death spiral indeed. We may come to a point in O’s second term where none of us have health care coverage but it won’t matter because the health care providers will be gone as well.

Looks like the Anti-Christ (Obama) has found his soulless mate (Sebelius).

Her arrogance and stupidity are stuff that legends are made of. Must have come out of a “Weird Science” experiment. Not born of a human, or at least one with a soul.

Sebelius was born and raised in a Roman Catholic family in Cincinnati, Ohio. She attended the Summit Country Day School in Cincinnati and graduated from Trinity Washington University in Washington, D.C. with a B.A. in political science. She later earned a Master of Public Administration degree from the University of Kansas. She moved to Kansas in 1974, where she served for eight years as a representative in the Kansas Legislature and eight years as Insurance Commissioner before being elected governor.

Sebelius is the daughter of former Democratic Ohio Governor John J. Gilligan, and thus they became the first father/daughter governor pair in the United States after her election.[

cardinal4: “she has no soul.”

No. She has one, but it’s devoted to serving the state. For all I know, she sleeps well at night thinking she’s gonna fix health care for all of us (whether we want her version or not). You see, we’re not capable of making our health care decisions. It’s for our own good.

I believe when American Christians humble themselves before the Lord, seek His face, and change their wicked ways that God will hear them, forgive them, and heal their land.

That includes divine physical healing. There were no feeble among the Israelites in the desert for 40 years. If God did that for them, He would surely do that for us. God keeps His promises.

False. The days of private ANYTHING is being attempted to force an end, by thefts, threats, confiscation, and intimidations.

As Pelosi said, we have to pass the law to find out what’s in it.

They thrill at letting us in on the secrets now and then.

The required plans will be so expensive that they will be unaffordable. Not only that, if you are above 50, you will not be granted medical care that you are required to pay in your insurance plan for, so what’s the use of having health insurance? How can private insurance companies sell us on that fine print? Right, Sebelius?
