OMAHA, Neb. Former Sen. Bob Kerrey is reversing course and says hell seek the Democratic nomination for the Nebraska seat he once held.
Kerreys announcement Wednesday comes just weeks after he publicly rejected a run to replace retiring Democratic Sen. Ben Nelson. Its also just two days before Nebraskas candidate filing deadline.
The 1992 presidential candidate and former Nebraska governor previously said not running was in his familys best interest.
Kerreys announcement gives new hope to national Democrats desperate to stop Republicans from netting four Senate seats this fall and regaining control of the chamber.
But its also sure to create state party friction. Fellow Democrat Chuck Hassebrook stepped into the race after Kerrey bowed out and gave up a University of Nebraska regent seat hes held for nearly 18 years.

I’ve switched my endorsement from Bruning to Stenberg. Stenberg has only had one race for the Senate where he had the nomination (2000, against the then-popular Nelson) where he only barely lost. He’s handily won other statewide races and just made a comeback in 2010. I simply cannot fathom why Kerrey wants to make a race he is almost certain to lose (and one that is almost guaranteed to get very ugly and bring up his ultraleft record, his own statements about his military record, and leaving the state to run a NYC Communist College). It will have been 18 years (1994) since he last won a race in the state. It almost sounds like masochism to me... or senility (he turns 70 next year and looks older).
Ray Walston died 11 years ago at 86.
11 years wow time does fly.
My Favorite Martian was certainly before *my* time (I was too young to go see Fast Times when it came out), but theu used to show reruns on TBS and I watched the show a few times.
And I see that DJ already filled you in re: Ray Walston’s passing.
Cornhuskers haven’t had a good senator since Roman Hruska and Carl Curtis retired. I would imagine some probably think Kerrey is still the senator. So when they see his name on the ballot, they won’t remember that he has been away for two terms.
Yes it does...
He doesn’t have to buy a house at all; he just has to file a local address when registering to vote. It’s a 30-day “residency” in all states for one to seek a U.S. Senate seat; it may be more in some states though to run for the state Senate, but NE has no state Senate. Conservatives may be expecting more from Cornhuskers than their voting history indicates likely.
Of course, the best part of “Fast Times” is the swimming pool scene with Phoebe Cates (or rather Judge Reinhold’s “fantasy”)... had to see that on the movie channels. They don’t make ‘em like that anymore.
You just can’t get rid of these assholes.
“The New School”. That should make a great campaign issue—for us!
Dems recycle politicos like trash.. bereft of any desire to let a new generation grab the battle flag.. or change the direction of the ship in the field of icebergs
This reminds me of Lautenberg in NJ when The Torch burnt out. Dems play by the numbers and know 50 is the key to power in the senate.
Bob Kerrey D-GV (Greenwich Village).
I’m baffled as to how nobody businessmen RINO Hagel and Ricketts manged to beat Stenberg in those Senate primaries.
His opponent should paint him as a NY liberal who taught at one of the most liberal colleges in NYC and hasn’t lived in Nebraska for years.
Probably outspent him.
