A campaign thats already seen its fair share of sharp attacks took a novel turn Wednesday morning when the spokesman for a super PAC backing former House speaker Newt Gingrich took aim at former Pennsylvania senator Rick Santorums ability to speak the English language.
Speaking on MSNBCs Jansing & Co., Rick Tyler said that the outcome of last nights primaries in Arizona and Michigan gave Gingrich an opening.
Rick Santorum failed to win, but Mitt Romney failed to inspire, Tyler said. Rick Santorum might win if he could speak English.
Tyler is a senior adviser to Winning our Future, the super PAC backing Gingrich.
It wasnt immediately clear what his remarks were in reference to. They might have been intended as a jab at recent provocative comments made by Santorum on the campaign trail, such as his statement that John F. Kennedys 1960 religion speech made him want to throw up.
A Santorum spokesman did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the statement.
Its not the first time in this campaign that someone associated with a super PAC has made a potentially problematic comment. Foster Friess, a millionaire donor to a pro-Santorum group, outraged womens groups when he made a joke about aspirin being used for contraception. Santorum quickly disassociated himself from the remark.

Yet the Non-Romney still wins.
Little Ricky cannot win...but when he disappears in the South, Romney will have to compete with NEWT!
Get ready Mitt...the Truth is coming.
Not true. Newt declined in Iowa because Romney spent a fortune on lying TV ads...and then spent over $20 mil in Florida on negative ads againsts Newt.
Bain actually hurt Romney because it told the truth.
Romney is scum...a vulture capitalist.
And what a frikken liar! Romney learned well about "lying for the Church."
It didn’t hurt Romney, it hurt Newt. Romney’s numbers really haven’t moved much. He is winning states, however slightly, Newt isn’t.
That said, I am well aware of Romney’s nasty tactics.
Yeah that’s some bad stuff. I am surprised he didn’t call all the democrats to vote for him. Give me a break, Santorum and Romney make Gingrich look like a choir boy. And don’t try to pretend you were going to vote for him until..............a true supporter doesn’t give up that easily. As far as Bain is concerned, I am glad he exposed Romneys corporate mayhem.
Romney is a liar...he will never be president.
Sorry! Pray to Joe Smith about that...see if Joe can relay the message to Satan!
Joe and Mo...message from an angel! More wives...more control...
Cults always come back home...to Satan!
You sound pleased that Romney won.

red, you can hear me? -:)
Very nice retort.
Ok dforest. You just replied to a post of mine that you were going to vote for Newt until Florida and Bain. Now you are saying it is because of his past behavior, his role as speaker, blah, blah, blah. Did you just find out about his earlier career issues? Lol. Stop trying to be the devils advocate, you are outed.
Just watching Liz Cheney on Greta. She would make a good Sec of State.
You said it!
Also, I wonder if that Gallup Poll showing a couple of points exchanged between Newt and Santorum, with Newt UP and Rick DOWN means that the astute Santorum supporters quickly recognized this week that Rick is shooting from the him, on the fly, and into his foot, ill prepared for the national ticket.
I hate it that Oklahoma and TN are said to favor Santorum.
Would like to see that corrected in a hurry. Oklahoma is NOT a union loving state, but this story of Santorum’s record of deference to unions was very LATE getting out.
Newt’s ground people are still unfunded to go into these states and get the facts out.
Wish Fred Thompson and JC Watts (R)OK would blanket the state for us.
Newt just got a big infusion of cash. I wouldn`t be surprised at all if he wins Tennessee and Oklahoma.
Most of Newt’s critics hammer on Newt’s personal issues; the two weird ex wives who captured him, but were more peculiar themselves than Newt EVER was;his odd alliances OUT OF OFFICE, back when he was trying to fund his various think tanks.
IN OFFICE, his accomplishments are legion; the take over of Congress in ‘94 was historic;the bodies are buried because Newt buried them;RINOs dispise him (and us); Marxists FEAR him;the rest is lies. He was not found guilty of ANYTHING. ALL charges the Democrats manufactured (80 some, I believe) were dismissed by the Ethics Committee.
He paid a damn fine to the IRS that was later REVERSED!
Did anybody SAY so? Heck, no.
This makes him my man. His enemies are our enemies, in spades, and we can’t get a civil “thank you” for the man who orchestrated an implosion of the Democrat Party.
Dunces all, plain and simple, but hey whoever said we had a well informed citizenry? We don’t.
Yes, that’s true, but no one seems to know how much of an injection that actually was.
By the time the dang thing showed up, Newt was $650,000 in debt with six states coming at him in Super Tuesday.
If it was the same as the last one, ($10 million), it’s gone yesterday, invested in his debt and the ads for a six state extravaganza.
I am very nervous if got enough to overwhelm more than the nearest neighborhood. Also wonder if the reason the amount is being kept secret is because it was so small as to be embarrassing.
But I am a worrier!
I guess we’ll be able to tell soon by what kind of effort he puts forth in upcoming states,
Why let that get in the way of a good story.
Although, I must admit I cringed when I heard Santorum tell a crowd of autoworkers that he had sat in a Chevy Volt and that he be "it drove real good."
Oh. Wait. This just in from a source other than WaPo.....that was actually Mullah Obama who said that.
Never mind.
Don’t be doin’ the happy dance quite yet.
As of this morning FOX has resurrected a video of the Newt “capitalism attack” on Romney. It even comes with a clip of Perry saying “vulture capitalism”.
They know where Newt slid and they are going to bring it back up before Super Tuesday.
Most of Newt’s problems Newt is responsible for. I don’t dislike Newt, but he usually crashes and burns in the limelight.
It took a little time, but once people thought about it, and got over Rush’s and Kudlow’s kneejerk counterattacks on Perry and Gingrich for daring to bring up Romney’s career as a Wall Street Corporate Raider, and ridiculously calling it an “attack on our capitalist system”, that whole thing will have blown over. Not gonna work this time.
