They dream of ending Miller's 38 years in Congress
Contra Costa Times ^ | 2/27/12 | Tom Barnidge, Contra Costa Times columnist

John Fitzgerald and Virginia Fuller would seem to have little in common. He's a Democrat, she's a Republican. He's from Concord, she's from Pinole. He's a painting contractor, she's a registered nurse.

Dig beneath the surface, though, and you will find two dreamers with the same ambition. They both are running for a seat in the House of Representatives, representing California's 11th District.

That means ousting George Miller, who's held office for 38 years.

Remember, we told you they were dreamers.

Challenging Miller's stranglehold on a congressional seat is like trying to pry a ham shank from a German shepherd. He's been in office since Gerald Ford was president and gas was 60 cents a gallon.

"It's nothing personal against Mr. Miller," said Fitzgerald, "but 38 years? I don't think he needs to be in office anymore. It's time for some fresh ideas."

Frustration with elected officials is hardly new. In the current climate, it's the norm. But it takes a special determination to climb into the ring and replace words with action.

Filing fees alone are more than $1,700. The cost to put a candidate statement in voter pamphlets can be four times that. That's to say nothing of media buys, campaign signs, voter rallies and door-to-door outreach. And, oh yeah, organization.

Miller is a real nasty bit of Commie Pinko work. I hope these candidates can get somewhere with this. He deserves to be fired.

Miller is the poster child of why congressional term limits are a must.

“....stranglehold on a congressional seat is like trying to pry a ham shank from a German shepherd.”

.
That’s why the establishment of TERM LIMITS is inherently important.

Don't forget the Congressional Black Crook Caucus which has an incredible concentration of high seniority crooks and buffoons.

Miller was one of the people who rammed ObamaCare up our asses when he is exempt. He is a Marxist jackass who needs to go with Jerry Brown in the dustbin of American political failures.

The system (our government) is so corrupt that even if we the people could some how force term limits on the congress, the courts at the behest of the establishment would declare term limits unconstitutional. Sad how our elected officials use the constitution when it favors them while simultaneously abusing it to put shackles on the rest of us. That's enough to piss one off.

Miller is the poster child of why congressional term limits are a must.

Term limits made the California legislature worse. Instead of competent crooks, we got incompetent crooks owing their job to whoever put up the money and absolutely needing a job waiting when they leave, usually as a lobbyist.

Agree, term limits alone for a particular political body aren't enough. There needs to be a mandated 10 year window between all offices of elected service to a different elected body as well as a lobbyist position. What ever it takes to make all elected offices immune from corruption should be pursued relentlessly until elected office becomes impermeable for abuse. 1st step, reinstate accountability to their oath of office. The slightest impropriety should warrant and demand immediate removal.

What is really needed is something tougher to achieve than term limits. What we need scares the elected politicians and their allies in the education community and the media will do everything to prevent. What we need are educated voters. Voters that realize there is no free ride , for politicians to give anything they must take from someone else.

Prison terms, public hangings, you get the idea.

There needs to be a mandated 10 year window between all offices of elected service to a different elected body as well as a lobbyist position.

Impossible to enforce. The biggest deterrent to corruption is to limit the power of the government to deliver the goodies.

1st step, reinstate accountability to their oath of office. The slightest impropriety should warrant and demand immediate removal.

How and by whom?

Although he was not my favorite founder, Hamilton presented a number of cogent arguments as to re-electability.

From The Federalist #53:

"a few of the members of Congress will possess superior talents; will by frequent re-elections, become members of long standing; will be thoroughly masters of the public business, and perhaps not unwilling to avail themselves of those advantages. The greater the proportion of new members of Congress, and the less the information of the bulk of the members, the more apt they be to fall into the snares that may be laid before them."

Term limits cut both ways, they get rid of the good as well as the bad. The good are hard to find. The bad can be gone in one term (or sooner if removed).

These cities have no idea of how much they waste on these ridiculous union employees’ salaries, benefits and ultimately a lifetime of 80% taxpayer-funded retirements, cashed out sick days and vacation days and a lifetime of Kaiser Permanente that we are stuck paying...

I know of a woman who worked a few years here in CA at a public university in an office function where she managed a group related to a technology/website function at the school.

In 5 years of working, she paid into the system $15,000, in 6 years of retirement, she has pulled out over $42,000 and used her $12,000 per annum in healthcare benefits. This is one example x thousands.

These staffs keep growing, and paying themselves handsomely, creating nothing.

there are no easy answers but coating a political crook with tar and feathers I understand used to work quite well. The stigma associated with being a recipient of that act went to the grave with the individual.

There was a stigma as long as there were moral standards upheld by the people. The problem now is a serious degree of moral astigmatism, n'est ce pas?
