Latest scientific 'game-changer' in abortion debate will send ended pregnancies soaring

Full title: Latest scientific 'game-changer' in abortion debate, out this week, will send ended pregnancies soaring but prevent heartache, suffering

Raising the prospect of a world without birth defects, a Stanford-created blood test that can detect Down syndrome and two other major genetic defects very early in a woman's pregnancy will be available this week.

The simple blood test spares women the risk and heartache of later and more invasive tests like amniocentesis.

But it has startling social implications — heralding a not-distant future when many fetal traits, from deadly disease to hair color, are known promptly after conception when abortion is safer and simpler.

Homosexuality is not genetic. It is borne of being molested as a kid.

I was going to post that too. The movie is supposed to be a frightening warning about what could happen in the distant future, if we do not pay attention to morality, not a reality created today to save on medical costs so that the federal government can afford the gender reassignment surgeries that matter to their voters. The far left seems to be taking all the movies and novels that I thought were a little too far over the top (Gattaca, Atlas Shrugged, and others), and using them as blueprints.

"...force the test on those expecting babies and refuse to pay for the expenses of Down Syndrome babies?"

This is such a grey area....the decision should be between the woman, her husband and her doctor. NOT the government or others whose opinions may differ.

[ How about the one that detects Democrats (or liberal socialists) ? ]

Actually it could be detected as a “mental disorder” as most of the hard core leftists are proven to be mentally defective, go look at Anita Dunn, she has Tardrive Diskinesa(sp) which is a side effect of harsh psychotropic drugs used to treat things like schizoprenia and bi-polar disorder.

The left is so damned cynical of the people’s ability to govern themselves via the Republic model they just CRAVE a system where the academic elite who “know better” are allowed to govern all of the “little people and the know nothings” who they deem are either mentally or genetically defective enough who are in their opinion unable to make their own “right” decisions.

They are ultimately Cynical of humanity and this shows in almost ALL of their policies, fromt he trans fats bans to their condescending ideas of social justice and minorities.

It’s not going to send abortions soaring, because only a small number of abortions are done for chromosomal reasons. 80% of detected DS pregnancies are already aborted, and 80% of undetected DS pregnancies miscarry naturally, usually early on.

They test women who’ve already had a baby with a chromosomal abnormality, but fetal cells linger in the mother’s body after the pregnancy, so it’s possible that cells from a previous baby will be detected.

I’m sure they’ll follow up any positive result (medicine is strange - positive usually means bad) with CVS or amnio before going on with abortion.

Not that this is a good thing.

“When does the one that detects homosexuality become available?”

Your question is asked in semi-jest, but someday, this may indeed become “ascertainable” through testing at some point during fetal development.

Hypothetical question (not directed at you personally):

Suppose you are a “conservative couple”, STAUNCHLY opposed to both the concepts of homosexuality and abortion.

And, suppose, during the course of [what will someday become] routine testing, your doctor informs you that your developing in utero male child will in certainty be a “born homosexual”?

What do you do?

I don't see a moral conflict there. Suppose (as is true) I am a conservative opposed to abortion and to adultery. And suppose, during the course of [what will someday become] routine testing, my doctor informs my that my wife's developing in utero male child will in certainty be a born with a temptation to commit adultery. I would have the child, of course, and teach him to place God's Word above whatever urges he may have that violate God's Word. That sounds like the situation that I expected for all of my male children and for a rather large fraction of males born worldwide. Is there a dilemma that I missed? Is there some expectation that God may ask nothing of us beyond that we follow our own whims and desires, or that our carnal desires should take precedence over our duty to God?

Wow. Stardrive Dyslexia. I had a girlfriend who had that. She was schizo and bi-polar (so she claimed).

Not that this is a good thing.

Let's just cut to the chase and have everyone sterilized after their genes are cloned and then have designer babies grown in test tubes.

I mean, the movie has been out a long time. We have the technology. What could possibly go wrong?

“So, is the next step to force the test on those expecting babies and refuse to pay for the expenses of Down Syndrome babies?”

Yup. Watch for the new HHS rule that says insurance companies can exclude coverage for those who either refuse the test, or refuse to abort babies who test positive.
