Seems like folks move and just leave their dogs behind.
Same here in rural AZ except it also seems to be suburban people coming out here and dumping their now unwanted/expensive-to-maintain pets instead of taking them to the pound.

Bud Linton, who owns a german shepherd, said the two dogs had jumped his 6-foot fence and were fighting with his dog, Max.

Just me, but I have yet to see a pit bull that can jump a 6 foot fence. Boxer maybe, but not a pit bull.

I may be uninformed. If I am then forgive me, but has anyone else ever heard of, or seen a breed of dog that has short legs with a torso as heavy comparative to its legs have the ability to jump 6 feet?

Please educate me, because something sounds fishy about this, unless I am wrong about the jumping abilities of pit bulls. As I said, I can understand a Boxer, but not a pit bull.

"...a breed of dog that has short legs with a torso as heavy comparative to its legs..."

Your question illustrates much of the problem with the so-called, "breed," and the generic application of the name, "pit bull" to a broad range of dogs. But, yes, I've seen very athletic dogs that could fit into the loose definition of "pit bull" that could launch themselves. At the no-kill shelter I volunteer at, we had one run specially fit with a caged roof for just such dogs, and while they may not be able to physically "leap" over a fence of that height, they can easily get up on it, and scramble over the top if they feel the compulsion to do so.

I’ve seen a doberman climb a 14 foot ladder. I wouldn’t say “Jump” as much as “Jump some, climb some”

But yeah, I can believe that part.

Thank you, I found more now also like these.

Pit Bull gliding over fence

Pit Bull climbing over fence

Pit Bull jumping over fence

So now I have been duly educated, because I have seen them not just jumping, but climbing and gliding over 6 foot fences.

I apologize for my ignorance. I learn something new every day.

Those are all truly amazing. I will look at these breeds in a whole different light from now on.

I had to follow the link to the "initial story" to find it but this is what I wanted to see...

Police said Linton will not face charges in connection with the incident,...

Good.

"Jumped a 6’ fence? Then went after a neighbor and her 2 little dogs? What, did they jump back over the 6’ fence to do that?"

Not unlikely at all. Especially if chain link (which I suspect, since they reacted to the visual cues of the presence of other dogs behind said fence). I've had Corgi pups climb over a "critter gate" with a mesh similar to chain link, of approximately equal ratio of "size of dog to height of fence".

Pit bulls aren’t like English Bulldogs - they are very muscular, but not “stubby”. I wouldn’t doubt that inch for inch in height, they could out jump a boxer.
