A new poll shows Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich with a significant lead in his home state of Georgia.
The Landmark/ Rosetta Stone poll of 1,300 Georgia voters gives Gingrich a 13-point lead over opponent Rick Santorum and a 19-point lead over Mitt Romney.
Garnering 38 percent of voters there is good news for the former House Speaker of Georgia who, just one week ago, played down expectations and said that it is possible that he could lose.
"Look, given this kind of a year, who knows?" Gingrich told reporters on February 16.
However, on Fox News Sunday last week, Gingrich put the onus on Romney to win his home state of Michigan. "If he can't carry his home state, I think the rationale for why is there a Romney candidacy," he told host Chris Wallace.
This Georgia poll, which was conducted on February 23, is backed up by a new analysis by New York Times' Nate Silver of the FiveThrityEight blog, who gives Gingrich a 79-percent chance of winning the Peachtree State.

Congrats to Newt in his home state. Good job being up double digits.
I’m a Santorum supporter, but glad to see Newt get his state and keep this thing out of romney’s reach. I’ll vote for Newt, but never romney or paul.
This is VERY good news, if Mitt-Witt manages to lose Michigan while Newt wins a major victory in Georgia, that will be cause for celebration!
Unfortunately I have to vote for Paul to try to keep Romney from winning Virginia.
?????????????????
Im a Santorum supporter, but glad to see Newt get his state and keep this thing out of romneys reach. Ill vote for Newt, but never romney or paul.
Unfortunately I have to vote for Paul to try to keep Romney from winning Virginia.
How will that keep romney from winning?
How will that keep romney from winning?
It may not. But at least it’s a vote against Romney.
Because, the only candidates that will appear on the Virginia ballot is Romney and Paul. And no write-ins allowed.
It will at least keep Romney from claiming another state victory even if Paul throws his delegates to Romney at the convention.
Overall it weakens Romney’s campaign, and strenghten’s that of your prefered “not-Romney” candidate. Those of us not in Virginia thank you for doing your part! ;o)
In my case I vote in Texas and our delayed primary maybe of little significance in the outcome.
Why are no write-ins allowed.....They are in Tennessee. (not that its an issue here)
Sorry... I should have posted that to Linda.
I wouldn’t discount Texas’ significance regardless how delayed the primary is. It may yet work out for the best.
Two weeks before Colorado/Missouri/Minnesota, I began to feel the current flowing to Santorum, especially here in Colorado...now, even in Colorado, I’m beginning to feel the flow going thee other way, back to Newt.
While Colorado has picked county and some of our state delegates, NO ACTUAL delegates to Tampa have been chosen, that won’t happen until April 13, 14. People who got elect
ed to state are overwhelmingly “uncommitted,” and those that are openly supporting a candidate are not bound.
The Virginina GOP (who are in the tank for Romney BTW) wrote the rules that way. They also tried forcing a potential voter to swear an oath to the Republican primary winner before being allowed to vote (probably under the assumption that it would be Romney), but backed away from that idea after an outcry.
Thanks for mentioning that unmistakable sensation of Newt-mentum. As Santorum sinks in the wake of his first vetting and attack ad blitz, the trick is going to be to make his votes go to Newt instead of Romney. The fact that Romney is hammering the point home every day that Santorum endorsed him and said he was conservative is extremely dangerous, and shows yet again why Santorum’s surge is the best thing that could have happened to Romney this month.
I think Newt needs to find a new line of attack against Romney to drop here and there, not like a hammer or anything. I would say he should underline the fact that we’ve rarely had businessmen as presidents, that those skills are not a good fit, and that the job is too big for someone who doesn’t have experience fighting the liberal and establishment enemy on the battlefield of Washington D.C. He should say any outsider at this stage of the game would get eaten alive, and that Romney unfortunately showed a tendency to go along with the status quo in Massachusetts instead of challenging it.
We really need Romney to come in 3rd in more states like this if we’re going to have any hope of wresting a negotiated convention from him. If he keeps coming in 1st and 2nd, I don’t see the delegate math working out for a possible Newt/Rick steal at the convention.
Newt brought the house down in his speech in Edmond, WAshington - they absolutely went wild over him.
He was also great today in California.
He is totally taking this campaign to oabama - ignoring the other candidates as if they didn’t exist. BRILLIANT.
It also show people just how he would wipe the floor with obama - he’s already, it would seem, started his dissecting obama’s speeches into shreds - exposing him for the liar he is - and making him a laughing stock.
He has found his campaign slogan and it is resonating. (He’s already got 750,000 “$2.50” donations - the logo is perfect...and he’s finally linked the rise in gas prices to a rise in food and everything else you buy. Like my son, the long hauler say, “If you bought it, a truck brought it.”
(reportedly, up to 7.5 million watched this speech)
This is going to wake up even the densest. And obama, the media and pundits are in a panic.
It’s a beautiful thing to see. It will be great to watch. But we need to roll up our sleeves and dive in to help.
CNN ran his speech live today - but now only has Rombot and Sanctimonious on the web sight.
Gingrich has a new campaign logo - outline of a gas pump with $2.50 in the middle. go to newt.org and give $2.50
It’s taking off like a rocket.
“... - ignoring the other candidates as if they didnt exist.”
And vice versa too.
