Eric Carmen studied piano at Julliard, and that experience was what prompted him to take pieces by Rachmaninoff and turn them into popular songs. This was a time honored tradition, for "Full Moon and Empty Arms" was taken from the third movement of Rachmaninoff's Second Piano Concerto in 1941.

"All by Myself" was taken from the second movement of the same concerto. Here is what the original sounds like.

Well...who knew! LOL!

Thanks for that little tidbit of information. The tune sounded
vaguely familiar, but of course I never thought about it
being a classic piece. :)
