”What a Guy” opened doors that not even Jeff Barry and Ellie Greenwich thought possible. The duo was asked to sing background on recording sessions all over New York and to sing demos of other writers’ songs. Quincy Jones hired Ellie to sing background on Lesley Gore’s recordings, and she quickly became the preferred demo singer for many of the top Brill Building composers.

They followed up their initial Raindrops hit with another.

The Quincy Jones connection earned more than just background vocals for Ellie. Jeff Barry and Ellie Greenwich gave Lesley Gore a major success in the summer of 1964. Note Hal Blaine’s “burlesque runway” drum riff after Lesley’s opening vocal line. This song is a masterpiece, with its movement from major to minor throughout. (This is one of my personal favorites.)

I remember when the Dead Boys came out, and the Pistols.
I thought they sucked.

Stiv Bators was a real jerk, he used to hijack the stage from my friends band. He’d just walk on stage in the middle of a song and grab the mike.
The band would wig out trying to keep it all together and then they would follow Bators lead and it just worked.
The man was an ego maniac.

Soon I was starting to like this stuff.
Then Stiv formed lords of the New Church with Brian James in an attempt to go mainstream.
Brian was cool, I had a few beer with him. It was just a gig for him.
But Stivs head swelled and.. POP!

”Doo Wah Diddy Diddy” was an early composition from Jeff Barry and Ellie Greenwich that finally achieved hit status when a group from the first wave of the British Invasion recorded it in the summer of 1964. Paul Jones, who later became an actor, handled lead vocal duties.

The Lieber & Stoller connection brought Jeff Barry and Ellie Greenwich to the Drifters for one of the group’s last successes.
