When I was in high school, I always had a rifle in my car. I lived in the country and didn’t want to pass up a shot at a coyote on the way to school and back.

Same here in Central VA back in 1966 when I graduated from high school; except shotguns were the norm as anything above .22 cal rifle was either illegal for hunting or had to be used from an elevated stand ...county laws differed greatly as to legal firearms; however, high powered rifles were legal the farther into the Piedmont you got. Now days most deer hunters use blackpowder or bowhunt. Shotguns are more the territory of those who hunt deer w/dogs (legal east of the Blue Ridge in VA) ...of course bird hunters still use shotguns.

When I was in high school, rifles and shotguns in the back window gunrack were a common sight in the pickup trucks parked outside. Of course, we were just country hicks that didn’t know anything about being in a gang or shootin’ up the school.
