Before I clobber any of my lib friends with that quote I’d like to know upon what ground I’m standing. Can you point me toward a reference for that quote ?

That quote is generally accepted as being from LBJ;
it was reported by someone in the meeting,
but it is not documented.
Clobber ‘em anyway. If they challenge you on it, ask them if the actual results are different from what the quote implies.
