Rick Santorum Winning More Support From Republican Women
By Amy Gardner, February 23
Over the past several weeks, Republicans have watched squeamishly as presidential contender Rick Santorum has waded into multiple controversies that risk alienating half the 2012 electorate: women.
But in fact, Santorum has grown more popular among women while talking about his opposition to abortion, his disapproval of birth control and his view that the federal government shouldnt pay for prenatal screenings. A new Washington Post-ABC News poll shows not only that Santorum is doing better among GOP women than he was a few weeks ago, but also that he is less unpopular and also less well known among Democratic and independent women than his Republican rivals Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich.
Voters and political strategists alike say Santorums rise has less to do with his views on these issues than on his ability to relate to the daily struggles of the middle class.
Nonetheless, the former senator from Pennsylvania and the other Republican candidates remain largely untested by the dynamics of a general election in which independent and Democratic women are expected to play a deciding role.
All of the campaigns and the White House are paying close attention to this major voting bloc, exploring how women feel about hot-button social issues and economic matters. Santorums views on health issues do not appear to have hurt in the primary. Yet he and the other Republican candidates are acutely aware of the danger those issues could present this fall.

Rick Perry was a values guy, but he got trashed.
Rush is full of crap. He is saying that conservatism, properly explained, will win every time but just saying conservative things does not mean one governs as a conservative. I like Rush but when it comes to presidential politics, he’s a total flop. Rush is almost unlistenable during primary seasons.
Just what is Santorum’s fiscal plan that has all of you all jazzed up to vote for him? I NEVER hear him talk about it. He’s off on these silly church related stuff. I want a candidate that is pro-life. All he has to say is that he is pro-life. That’s it. Nothing more has to be said. Now, my question to the candidate is how are you going to turn this economy around? How are you going to reduce the size and scope of government? Do you have a plan to deal with the problems we face around the world? What is your energy plan? I’ll guarantee you one thing. If Romney, Santorum or Obama wins the election, things will continue to get worse.
Why aren’t you folks rallying and partying over at the Newt threads celebrating how he is creaming Romney and really doing something productive in this election. Oh yeah. Because he isn’t. He is below Paul in the polls in some cases. Feel free to be the “Sour Grapes” patrol on Santorum threads. We pretty much know what your game is and it isn’t working. We are going to keep supporting our guy all the way to the WH.
Because Perry couldn't express himself with any coherence. He also ran a lazy and ineffectual campaign.
But its not just Rush (”Santorum is the last standing true conservative”) and Mark Levin who back Santorum, so do the Republican primary voters, and the general electorate, as well as leading conservative publications like Townhall; The American Spectator, The Weekly Standard, and National Review, who have demanded Gingrich to immediately withdraw this futile will-o-the-wisp quest and stop enabling a Romney win. You folks need to wake up to reality. This is now a 2-man race. No one’s talking Gingrich anymore. Stuff like permanent moon-based colonies during a $1.6T national debt and $1.3T deficit, some 9% unemployment, pie-in-the-sky $2.50 gasoline, and some 6000 earmarks, mocking Reagan in private, just ain’t going to cut it and the voters are expressing their preferences with their feet, especially women voters.
Rush has lost touch and should retire soon. He doesn’t fight for conservatives anymore. His business is in perpetuating the problem so he can complain about it.
As for Saint Rick, he has no platform, and he is a hypocrite who doesn’t stand for what he claims to stand for. He’s an opportunist trying to get elected, that’s all. It’s for that reason that his platform is so tepid to begin with. His primary issue is himself. We need a candidate whose issue will be radically reforming this government.
Saint Rick made how how much working for hospitals he voted funds to? Unlike Newt, Saint Rick wants us to think he’s a saint... and so do you guys, for that matter.
If you guys are happy with what is basically a ordinary platform without any meaningful reform, vote Saint Rick. At least you can buy sweater vests that have been dunked in holy water from him.
“I see you constantly melting down on Santorum threads on what a loser this guy is with absolutely nothing empirical to add.”
Considering you yourself can barely even follow along in a debate about political platforms without leading with insults and leaving with insults, you really shouldn’t talk. Did you ever figure out Santorum’s platform by the way? I can teach it to you again, if you want.
Yeah, screw that record.
Take a look at the early debates,
Santorum sucked. he was petulant and crappy.
You’re on drugs. Didn’t National Review endorse Romney? Conservatives this cycle have gone nuts. They don’t know what’s going on anymore.
Good luck with Rick, Chum.
He is perhaps the weakest candidate.
I was wondering where Newts n00by campaign worker was. You really need to get it into gear before he slides totally into single digits in the polls.
I don’t waste time selling Rick to haters. Why waste the time. If you are genuinely on the fence in supporting Rick, figure out how Google works.
I believe Newt suggested that a “moon colony” would be primarily privately funded. Didn’t he? The Chinese are working toward such a goal. Aren’t they?
As far as Rush and Levin (who I love) why would anyone let a stranger make such an important choice for them? Why would anyone let the media (the publications you listed) make their choice? Don’t buy into the media hype. It will only hurt you.
Another lagging poll.
The poll was conducted between the 15 - 19, Feb with a high margin for error of 9.5%. Just wait until you see the polls starting on the 23rd and after the AZ debate, and when the millions of dollars spent in negative ads start to take effect, then we will see where everyone stands.
Apparently in state tuition for illegals didn't sell well to the voters.
Yes, Newt meant development of the moon as in private enterprise.
You keep saying that, but if that is true where is everyone else running away with this thing. Newt has a big bank roll and is the smartest man in the room. Shouldn't he be dominating this election? Not the dim witted clown clutching his bible as you insinuate.
Thanks, Red Steel. I was beginning to think I was hearing voices in my head, lol.
It sold fine in Tx for a decade.
Not a dime came out of your pocket.
State comptroller Susan Combs said we saved money in a situation the Feds FORCED on us.
