Why do so many people hate California?

Surf. Sun. Disneyland. What’s not to love about California?

Well, apparently, a lot of things. In a poll released Tuesday by the Public Policy Polling, California was the least popular state in the United States. Only 27 percent of Americans hold a favorable view of the Golden State compared to the 44 percent who view it unfavorably.

“There’s this arrogance about Californians,” said Patrick Dorinson, a radio host in California who refers to himself as the Cowboy Libertarian. “Californians still think it’s this great star. It’s a tarnished star at this point.”

The gap of 17 points puts California far behind Illinois (19 favorable, 29 not) and New Jersey (25 favorable, 32 not) as the least liked state in America.

“I’m actually quite surprised California fared so poorly,” said Albert M. Camarillo, a professor of history at Stanford University. “I think the national public knows of our difficult budget situation, our higher than average unemployment rate, the still very expensive housing market.”

The “Left Coast” is distinct in another way – more people have an opinion about California than any other state – only 28 percent of respondents couldn’t decide whether they liked the state or not.

It’s not California so much as its electorate that I hate.

The Catholic voter came to dominate California and turned it into a Democrat stronghold, see the chart in post 31, Protestants are still voting Republican, for instance in 2004 Bush won 60% of the Protestant vote, yet lost the state.

why do liberals always want to use the word “hate”

I was just looking at that thread on the homo hairdresser, thinking deep thoughts about “homophobia” and spontaneous combustion, and a serviceable answer came to me:
By applying the word “hate” (ignorance=fear=hate) well, that means that there’s something wrong with the person repelled, rather than the thing that could be seen as hateful.
By this line of reasoning, if *you* just came to understand (the corrupt, financially & morally bankrupt state of ) California, or (the man-to-man practice of buggery/sodomy) homosexuality, then you would no longer fear and thus hate it.
In other words, you’re/we’re the problem as “phobics” but, to the contrary, you would be acceptable if you came to understand, embrace and love California and homosexuals, as a Caliphile or homophile.
Finally, as President Zero points out in the thread on the “stupidity” of drilling for oil, this theory presupposes stupidity on the part of those who refuse to accept 2012 Californication and militant butt-pokery.

It hurts thinking like a lefty, don’t it?

I saw the writing on the wall a long time ago. We left in ‘94.

I’m 3rd generation Californian, now living in Idaho (which is a really awful, horrible place to live. Well, at least that’s what I tell liberal Californians who might want to live here).

Illinois and California used to be critical swing states much like Ohio and Florida are now. Slowly, but surely, more purple states have been turning blue as the country follows California and Illinois into financial hell

Most of us here do not hate California but the communists/liberal filth that have ruined the State. And it is still being steered down the drain.

Before Edmund G Brown, it was quite a place.

California had aerospace, agriculture, automotives as industries, and that’s just starting with the ‘a’s’.

Their colleges were the envy of the planet.

Then they started electing non-stop democrats. Prop 13 was the rare respite (tax revolt - see Howard Jarvis).

Now? If you took from Bakersfield south and gave it to Mexico we’d be ahead of the game. Reconquista and liberals have destroyed it.

It is just this whale-sized tick that keeps sucking the blood out of the rest of the country.

You’re totally right. California is a most beautiful state - I love it. I was there when it was half Republican/half Democratic in the 1970s. Despite the politics, I’ve always found the people very nice. But then half my family lives there.

I had friends that moved to Idaho, both the husband and wife were native Californians from California families, the wife took her mother and adult brother with her, and the husband’s father and mother, and so far one adult sister have joined then over the years.

The husband and wife did not want to raise their California born children here.

Favorite (true) Californica story:

~~~~~~~~~
Talking to a (Texan) pal on 2 meters while driving to DFW for a flight to a meeting in 'Frisco.
Pal: "Be careful -- those people out there are wierd!"
~~~~~~~~~

In the SF hotel, I ask the guy replacing all the TV cable (carpet layers stapled through it) where I could find a bookstore. He gives me directions to one a few blocks away -- then cable guy says,

"Be careful -- those people out there are wierd!"

Interesting comments about California residents. My husband and I went salmon fishing at a place in British Columbia. We were told that we would be sharing a cabin with 2 men from California. My husband has CA cousins who are as liberal as they come, so we were worried.

When we met our 2 cabin mates, one was a farmer and the other was a tractor salesman. We were very pleased and they turned out to be nice regular guys. Politics never came up.
